Congratulations on your hatch!

Some of my Sussex enjoyed bacon and eggs for breakfast, some laid, and some stayed inside.

your chicks are just too adorable... I love them. I think speckled Sussex are such a cool gentle and very good looking breed. I have 6 hens that I got last year from the feed store. I am not sure where they got them from, but they only had hens. I now need a rooster, but I don't want to get from a different hatchery, and only because these are so pretty and very heavy, so I figure it is a good strain from wherever. I just have to remember to ask them where they got the babies from last year and then order a couple of males myself from them. I know I will not get pure eggs to set until next year, but oh well....life goes on. It will give me a project for next year also. lol

Kathyinmo, if you don't mind me asking, is that pine shavings in the nest boxes and on the ground in your chicken coop?? I want to try something different. I have been using straw for the nesting...but yours looks so much neater.

Thanks, we have some white in the ear lobes I am not happy about so I am going to get with a friend about that and hopefully can come to a solution with the spring breeding. I hate to bring in a new rooster as Big Guy is so sweet but I have to correct this. Other wise I think they look good too. Still need work but what doesn't. I do not show so I am not as hard core with my culling as others but I do try to breed to the standard.

Yes, I use pine shavings for everything. I read that straw harbors mold spores, so I just never have bought any. I am very happy with the shavings, and they are easy to clean up.

I 2nd the pine shavings. So much easier than straw.

I used to use the pine shavins, but then more eggs were broken. I use a blend of Straw and Pine Needles with Pine Shavins on the bottom, to soak up any water or egg that may have broken...
