The Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen) Thread!

Thank you Chick18! This is a much better translation than the one I have. I got the gist before, but it's clarified now. I also found mention that "curled" feathers may occur and were accepted. I thought this was probably meaning what I've seen referred to as wooly.
I'm definitely copying this for future reference if I do decide to breed the Svarts that I have.

These are I would considered as top selected breeders. They do have frostbite from the cold winter so excuse that. N they are starting to fight with each other. But nonetheless these r top pick quality.

Edited to add these r less then a year old

My svart hona rooster is a complete jerk. I'm going to end up sending him to freezer camp. He is constantly sneaking up on me,(trying to anyways), and I raised him from a 2 day old chick along with a gorgeous and very sweet hen. I have a total of 5 hens and him, but I can't take his attitude anymore. He isn't perfect by his waddles, everything else is black as night, but mulberry waddles. I love his comb, looks like old black leather. I'm sick of the flogging tho.

Both of my boys turned out to be total jerks. One almost killed one of my hens. He went to freezer camp immediately after that. He had a lot of white feathering so hadn't planned on keeping him anyway. The other one was always good to the girls but attacked me. He went to freezer camp over the weekend. Now I just have 2 girls and they are both moody broodies. I hadn't really planned on breeding them anyway.

Man, I hope mine don't end up being jerks. Of the three I bought, it looks like I have two cockerels and a pullet. I was hoping to get lucky on the pullet side since they were bought straight run, but at least I've got one! I guess I'll wait until they're older and strutting their stuff before I decide how to proceed with two cockerels.

I haven't had any trouble from mine. What is your line?

I've got a broody that is kicking the eggs out right before they hatch and starting over. That's making me crazy. :barnie

All,

I've got up to 12 pure Svarthona chicks and 6 Swedish Bluebar x Svarthona (so blue or black with green eggs) hatching this weekend. I'm in Virgina. Local pickup only. PM me if you are interested.

I also have hatching eggs.

I love when people say their birds are greenfire or ewe crazy - isn't just about ever svart hona in America from one of those 2 sources at some point, even if not directly bought from them? How many other importers where there? Those are the only ones I'm aware of.

I'll keep plugging away at the hatching and heavy culling. I feel I almost need to get another incubator just for svart hona so I can constantly hatch those and not interrupt hatching other breeds

Hey there, just saw your post re: sources for the SBH. I received my day old chicks from BJ's Poultry about 1 1/2 yrs ago. I couldn't be happier and just last week wrote and told them so. My hens have raised 24 chicks and not a white speck among them. These are the sweetest most friendly birds on earth. I believe my line is all round pretty excellent. Thanks and best of luck to all.
