i fixed a snack of leftovers for my hens the other morning; roost pork, black beans, and a little white rice. it smelled pretty good upon heating it up. i could help but notice that they didn't seem to be eating the new laying pellets i was trying them on (layena). so i tasted it. i don't recommend this. no wonder they aren't eating it.

I'll take your word for it! I once tasted Friskies dry catfood to see what the never ending attraction was for my toddler. Not spit-it-out bad, not really to my pallate. I know chickens have good taste buds, watching them spit out stuff they don't like while foraging.

per other threads, there's not a chance it's moldy is it?

but really, given the choice between the two foods you described, which would you eat?

Yeah, but chickens eat worms and slugs. I suspect their tastes are different from ours.

we started ours with dumor and switched to layena from others saying it was better.. our hens hate the layena but they are going to eat it or go hungry.. going back to dumor..

If my chickens don't like some new pellets crumbles etc, I make " Mash" with it! It's really simple. You just add warm water to it and let it soak in and then you can put greens or whatever in there and my chickens gobbled it up! You might give it a try! Hope this helps!

Yes, mix it with other things they like. Milk, oatmeal cookies and Layena. Mine love it! I also top it with some frozen peas that I simply run under hot tap water. I finally found a natural dewormer cure and I sprinkle that on as well. "Wormguard Broad Spectrum" by theholistichorse.com

For some reason this made me giggle out loud. Very true!

Although I did know a boy once in fourth grade or so who swallowed a worm whole on a dare. He then kept excusing himself from class, claiming the worm was squirming around in there.

Me too..

If it tastes like dirt my chickens will love it.. Their favorite snack is when I dump the container of a lettuce plant in for them. They eat the organic dirt, roots and all.

Seriously though the chickens can be picky when you switch foods, I usually do it by mixing the old and the new for a few days.
