The taste of Muscovy?

we did a muscovy early last summer. roasted it and went looking for more.. I have 8 mallard type ducks left and when they are gone, there will me no more..I bought a pair of chocolate muscovys and my neighbor gave me three baby chocolate musovys..
these I hope to build my new flock of muscovys.. I/we think the meat is terrific.. My drake is about the size of a small goose, already, and he isn't even a year old..

Muscovys seem very tame and I think they would make fine pets.

We had Muscovy ducks years ago and they were the best. Ours were good grazers and could fly unless a wing was clipped. I've haven't looked for or seen one in the supermarket. I always thought they were more of a farm duck. The meat was delicious. I would love to have them again but we are not set up for ducks.

Thanks for all the comments and input. If we can swing it & come up with an inexpensive way to set up and shelter some Muscovy separtate fm the chickens we'll start up this next spring. The more I hear and read about Muscovy the more I like the idea of raising some.

K O T Hearth, you really do not need much shelter for muscovys.
I have a young trio that just took it upon themselves to reside in the chicken coop at night. my older pair goes into the open air lean-to for the nights.. daytime they are freerange around the yard like the geese.. they are winter hardy too, like the geese.. the only reason I pen them at night is to keep the foxes from snatching them..

the males grow to be really large and meaty .. the females are petit.

be careful if you have a problem with killing pets.. muscovys have a real friendly nature and love being with people.. I suggest you have a pet pair and keep the rest at arm's length..

jvls1942 is right. As I remember, we didn't have much shelter for our Muscovys. Seems to me I read that they weigh 8-14 pounds. Ours seemed large and there was a lot of meat on their bones, unlike the Pekin ducks.

Thanks jvls1942, Very good idea ,esp. if they are a friendly duck. Didn't have much trouble with the mallards though they weren't all that friendly & began causing too much trouble w/the chickens. I am finding it really hard to cull the chickens though. Even the ornery extra cockerals... it is not fun and I'm thinking the meat isn't all that tasty compared to a fat meat chicken fm the store. We'll try cullling the cockerals when they are younger and see if that works out for us.
