A have a pointer...who's supposed to be an all around amazing hunter..
Well, my German shorthaired pointer hates water, hates loud noises which includes gunshots, and somehow is great with chickens???? She is an amazing family dog but would not make a good hunting dog for obvious reasons! Im sure she will kill a rabbit or squirrel if we let her though..

I see Australian shepherds getting a slightly bad reputation. Mine have always ignored my poultry. It's one reason I like them. They do like to chase cats, but the cats seem to enjoy it, so that works out.

Aussies do need a confident experienced owner and lots of exercise. They are bred to think for themselves and move cattle, so they can become dominant, and pushy. They are also sensitive, so simple things like keeping them off your bed and couch, and moving them out the way goes a long way. They like to lay right at your feet, so we are constantly asking for ours to move.

My Aussie was one of the best dogs I’ve ever had, and she never had any issues with my birds.

My current mini Aussie is pretty good overall except for when I'm in the chicken coop without him, he'll grab the fence and shake it violently while screaming at the chickens. He is just fine when he's with me or they're free ranging, he's witnessed the rooster attack me several times so he freaks out when there's a barrier. He used to pay more attention to the chickens when they were out but I think he's realized over time that I don't approve and the chickens aren't worth bothering.
