"I'm the same age as her!" he hissed. "I don't care if Brightcloud is deputy. Just because he's all high and mighty doesn't mean I have to worship him. And under no means should you trip a warrior."

Sunpaw puffed up her fur indignantly. "And this is what I get for trying to help somecat." She growled softly and stalked off. Fine! Let him by that way!

"Just leave me alone!" he snarled, stalking to the other end of camp and tearing into a piece of fresh-kill. Why bother getting close to anyone? They would just die anyway, and then you'd end up hurt. It was better to stay on your own.

Once she was on the opposite side of camp as him, she looked at him. She knew he didn't want to be close to any cat, but surely it was better to have one friend than to be alone?

He saw the way Sunpaw was looking at him and pretended he didn't notice. He had thought as a kit that it was wonderful to care about someone, but then his mother had died and it had left him devastated and cold. He had never known his father, since his mother had run off and broken the warrior code, so he had been alone ever since.
