The Truth About the "Pea Sized Blob" of Horse Paste De-Wormer

My vet used to caution me not to cut heartworm medicine in half to treat smaller dogs using the same logic that the whole log might not have a consistent amount of medication in each half. LOL. Those things are passed through a machine cut into thousands of pieces, so you know they have the same amount of medicine in every gram. I always gave the proper amount for the weight. I also used horse paste in tiny divided doses for dogs years ago.

How big is a pea sized amount?

From left to right:
Small = 0.1 ml = 10 mg
Medium = 0.25 ml = 25 mg
Large = 0.5 ml = 50 mg

From left to right:
Small = 0.1 ml = 1.87 mg ivermectin
Medium = 0.25 ml = 4.675 mg ivermectin

Large = 0.5 ml = 9.35 mg ivermectin
The blob above the grain of rice is 0.025 ml (0.4675 mg ivermectin)

Okay, so how did this misinformation start? I see it everywhere, including a book, and some people say to use this "blob" for all types of de-worming pastes. So far I've seen it suggested for Safeguard and Panacur, Ivermectin, Zimectrin Gold, and Moxitectin. The only one I haven't seen is suggested for is pastes containing pyrantel pamoate (Strongid, Exodus, etc.).

Eqimax is a dose of 0.03ml per pound, and repeated in 14 days. That would be 0.15 ml for a roughly 5 pound bird
So not 5 consecutive days. I have one poor girl that can't be more than a pound. She went broody twice (no rooster) and definitely has segments in her poop. .03ml would be a tiny amount for her because .15ml is even a small dose.

To treat tapes you can give this:

If the bird weighs one pound, I would give 1/4 tablet orally, then repeat in 10-14 days. This will treat tapworms.
