One of my Runners ate a mouse! It had drowned in the pond and the duck grabbed it and sucked it down before I could get rid of it. Anyone have similar experiences? Should I start giving her catfood? I'm allergic to cats so this may be a prayer answered for rodent control!

It wasn't my ducks, but I watched a hen of mine eat a mouse almost whole. She was flopping it around for a while so I figured she was just playing with it, until she just ate it whole. O.O I kind of just stood there in shock, and didn't think about grabbing it from her.

Now that I think of it, I hope that's not why she isn't laying eggs...and that maybe she's laying them in the woods somewhere...hmmm...

Thanks. At least I know I don't have a cat in duck's clothing. I did just have several poo samples checked and no worms, parasites or harmful organisms were found. Only $38 at the vet for 2 tests and definitely worth knowing I don't need to give them worming meds.

Does anyone know if ducks eat tadpoles? We are working on a small pond, but with all the rain we've had, the pond has frogs.
I can't image trying to get them out, to put the ducks in! What a task that would be! Ugh!

Yes they do!! I have 4 ducks,2 Blue Swedes and 1 Mallard and 1 Black Swede and the Blue swedes have a field day if they find one! Mine used to be a fish pond,my fish died after many years,only tadpoles and frogs and toads!! Doesn't matter how big they are either,I have only been able to steal 1 large one out of my Ellie's mouth! She is quick!!

I change it daily.

The runoff is channeled into the garden, so it is not wasted.

I don't know if this could be considered a treat or just plain awesome food for ducks. I started fermenting feed for my chickens over a year ago, awesome food and they love it. When we got a drake and two hens for snail and slug control we started giving them a choice between regular feed, 50/50 with cracked corn or the FF. FF won out over the dry feed. I haven't had them long enough to go thru our dry season here in Costa Rica but for chickens the moist feed really helps them as there water intake goes down. The moisture in the feed really helps the digestion as they don't have to consume water right after eating just so the feed would be easier to digest. Hey Costa Rica Art, glad to see you over here, I too am feeding FF and my flock loves it, also did experimenting back a couple months ago with dry feed, found out real quick it wasn't a hit. I have been feeding ff for almost a year and think it has been a great move here with my flock.
