Ok, is it fair to say best high maintenance pets are dogs and the best low maintenance pets are cats? Because I’d like to introduce the best small animal pet: the fancy rat ***holds for applause***

I am definitely a cat person. I like dogs fine, I don't especially ever want to own one, though. My favorite way to have dogs in my life is when I have friends who have dogs and so I can occasionally hang out with dogs without having any of the responsibilities of owning one. We had a menagerie growing up, but oddly never had a dog in our household, so I don't have a lot of the deep childhood love of dogs the way I do with cats (and various other animals).

Thinking about all the kinds of animals I've had in my life (we were the house in the neighborhood that kind of had the reputation for taking various pets that needed new homes when I was a kid) cats, chickens and iguanas are the only three I continue to want to own in adulthood.

Something like that! Although my desire to hang out with dogs does not extend to ever offering to dog sit, haha. More like I'll come socialize with my friends and love on their dogs while they're also around to pick up poop in the yard or whatever.

My DB and SIL call me Auntie K or “Auntie Kdogg” they just have dogs so far

I prefer dogs (had them most of my life). Cats are nice and fun, but not in my house. I don't like the clawing and litter box misses!
My absolute favorite, though, are birds. Parakeets, canaries, love bird, cockatiel, chickens -- had them and loved them all!

Totally understand that!! Litter boxes and the clawing everything are the one thing I hate about cats LOL

And yessss!! Birds are amazing!! I currently have chickens, quail, and the parakeets and I love it. I really want cockatiels eventually or another, bigger kind of parrot lol
