My dog caught a squirrel last week.
She was in big trouble. I consider them my wild pets and feed them. I made her drop it and it ran away, hopefully uninjured. Dogs.

That’s amazing!!Both, absolutely! My dogs keep coyotes away from my chickens and also help control the sqirrels. The cats keep mice out of the house. Everybody earns their keep around here. And both are warm, fuzzy companions. No cats on tables or counters around here!![]()
I don’t personally have experience with this but I’m sure there are people who have! I would start with the dog on a leash though and possibly a muzzle at first for safety but also, before you even go near the chickens I would make sure he knows a good “leave it” command as well as a “focus”/“watch me” type command (looking at you) and of course basic obedience like sit, down, stay, drop it, that type of thing and working on impulse control. All that is quite important to have before you even introduce the chickens and will greatly help. Once he knows those things, it’s pretty easy to transfer it to chickens. Though you might have to start at a distance first where he stays calm. Reward him for looking at you and/or ignoring the chickens but some also teach what not to do first so correct for showing too much interest or fixating or whatever which is also good but I’d do both. Anyway, not sure if that was helpful or not but hopefully!Hey, I know this is a little off of the topic but I wondered, have any of you rescued an adult dog that chases foxes squirrels birds etc, and have you had luck with getting the dog to Not Chase after your chickens? I was just curious
We adopted an adult dog who chases everything, and she is definitely not allowed in the chicken run. No telling what she would do.Hey, I know this is a little off of the topic but I wondered, have any of you rescued an adult dog that chases foxes squirrels birds etc, and have you had luck with getting the dog to Not Chase after your chickens? Awww. Sorry it didn't work out. Puppies are definitely a full-time job for a while! Glad you found him a good home! ❤Cats 100%! I work full time, and my kitties are appreciative of all the time we have together when i get home. We can just chill together in the office and to the cats it qualifies as "spending quality time" with me. I had a 8 month old Queensland heeler puppy earlier in the year and despite spending a couple hours every day with him, it was never enough. He wouldn't leave me alone to let me relax! I ended up re-homing the pup to a nice retired lady, who could spend her whole day with the little guy. Dogs are just to needy! (and smelly)
