Question....what feed do you give your laying pullets/hens? As of right now I'm thinking this will remain a 'no boys allowed' coop. I've been reading off and on, on BYC and I'm seeing so many answers. Keep them on starter, switch to all flock, go with layer. So confusing!

We buy our feed from a local grain store in Taunton , MA. We generally feed layer pellets. When the girls slow down and molt we shift to either game pellets or to grower. Their feeds are listed on the website.

If they were egg factories there wouldn't be this problem. They are unfortunately for some living creatures and as such not subject to the precision one would associate with a production machine.
An adjustment in your view of the chicken would ease the anxiety.;)

It's ultimately up to you. I feed a 20% protein flock raiser with free choice grit and oyster/egg shell on the side. This works best for me because I don't have to do any changing of food if I get new chicks or have a broody hatch chicks because they can all eat it.

Millie layed her first egg this morning! She stood on the ramp into the coop and sang her egg song as loud as she could. ❤️ Unfortunately it had a soft shell and had gotten broken. For the next hour and 30 or 40 minutes she belted out her egg sang and would go into the nest box to sit for a few minutes. The last time she did it, she went and sat for around 45 minutes. I checked around and there wasn't another egg. Was she maybe feeling like she was going to lay again? Practicing the process?

Adding: The ladies have layer feed mixed with their starter as we're finishing up the bag and oyster shells on the side.
