I now am part of the waiting group too. I have my brooder mostly ready, feed and shavings, but am still waiting for the heat lights and feeders to arrive from a separate company than McMurray, since they were cheaper. My ornamental layers assortment arrives the week of May 3rd. I'm so excited to see what breeds I will end up getting out of the 35 or so possibilities. I could have gotten just a few chicks from the local feed store, but I wanted to get the "fun" chicks, but of course I live in an urban area near Disneyland where we can have 5 hens per city codes, so I figured that having 10 would be okay
and I am giving away the other 15 to some friends after the first week or two.
I built a chicken tractor all by myself last weekend.
and since I'm in sunny CA, I can start using it a few weeks after the chicks are here. My father in law will be helping me with the coop, after I show him all the pictures on this website.
My husband is somewhat less enthusiastic, but he is an eternally patient man and will make it through this. He has embraced the organic produce that we get each week via our local Community Supported Agriculture group, and is eating kale, chard, kohlrabi, butternut squash, and a gazillion pounds of broccoli, so I figure he will be won over once the eggs start coming in.
