The Wally-Gee Bee Journey 🐝

Oh yeah, for you ladies digging the light purple paint, it’s called Peace and Happiness. It’s the color we painted our daughter’s room 17 years ago when we moved in this house. The paint was still good. Leftover, free is always best!

I pulled honey supers today and moved one colony into the long hive. I’ve heard it, read it and even said it myself… that honey is heavy! I was not ready for that weight when I tried to pick up that medium box. The bees were trying to eat my face off! A thunderstorm was coming which didn’t help much. Pics were not an option. I had so many stingers in my gloves! Honey extraction coming soon!

It’s so hot today (102F). I wanted to do some bee changes and check out my long hive, which I haven’t opened since I put the bees inside. Yard work took up the cooler morning hours, so the bees get another day of peace and harmony.

First year for me. Picked up a nuc this spring and the colony rocked it. Just made a split, introduced a new queen into both Hives (they are an ornery lot - sting me regularly for doing nothing but watch them). They say mean Hives are the best, but it is not fun to be chased down, so I got 2 Caucasian queens. The original colony actually killed the first one so I had to buy another and they balled up on her queen cage too, so I put her in a push in cage over some brood that is about to hatch.

Been an interesting and educational adventure. And I did pull a super of honey off them. (8 frames). 2 gallons of honey :)

Wish I had a mentor. It's been fun but sometimes I just have questions. Youtube is great. Bob Binnie and Kaymon Reynolds are my favs.

Kaymon is a wealth of information. It can be like drinking from a firehose. Having a mentor that you can call on for advice and actual help doing things is invaluable. Congrats on your first split! You’re way ahead of me 😁.

Check with your state beekeeper's association for local beekeeping clubs. Not sure what state you're in but most have very good information. Binnie and Reynolds are good, but mostly for southern beekeepers.

I am west of Kaymon in S MO. Maybe a little more south than he is. I am debating joining a club, the closest is an hour away though
