The Welsummer Thread!!!!

i see they sell egg cleaner wipes at the tractor store ..does anyone use them ??..
i have a dry scratchy towel that i use ..it works ok for me ..i always tell anyone who gets eggs from me that i havent washed the eggs ..i no some look at me like i am crazy ..i exsplain to them about the coating of bloom and it tends to put them at ease ..i do tell them they can wash them before the eat them ..

I only wash poopy eggs(don't get many),
rinsing thoroughly (no soap) with water warmed than the egg and much rubbing of the hands over entire shell surface,
then store them in fridge until I eat them myself rather than sell them.

I sell unwashed eggs, have explained it all to my customers and they understand,
some wash before and using some don't.

I've always stored my eggs unwashed and wash them just before I use them. I've never had wellie's before and have heard the color washes off the eggs, is this true? I had three wellies, one broke it's hip, another got ate along with a few other chickens while free ranging. Mine hasn't started laying yet, hopefully it lays a dark egg. I have a beautiful wellie roo and plan on hatching out more in the spring. I have four EErs also and plan on breeding to the wellie roo and keeping the blue eggs (if they lay any blue ones) to hopefully end up with some olive eggers.

Just a wash under water won't wash off the color, but if you scrape hard, then yes, the color can come off.

Good, I was hoping it wouldn't come off, never did on my other chickens eggs, I just have never had wellie's before and read that they 'painted' their eggs towards the end of their egg making process and it would wash off. I guess it probably doesn't much matter if you don't wash them until you eat them anyways,LOL!

i was reading on here the other day about this woman who had eggs that would lose color were her hands were touching the eggs ..it was on this site somewere ..i've tried looking it back up but have had no luck ..she had pics and i think a vid of it ..not sure what caused it but i would think it was because she had something on her hands ..maybe the oil from her skin or some kind of acid ..maybe acitone ..she had fancy nail polish on and it was what i thought first when i seen it ..but it was strange to see none the less..

i have a wellie that just started laying and she laid one that was like half terracotta and half lite brown ..the whole egg had spots or speckles on it ..i havent gotten another from her like that one ..

Just thought I would remind everybody that the speckles of a Welsummer egg are ON the egg, not in the eggshell. They are deposited during the trip down the oviduct.
They do wash and rub off because of this.
sometimes, there are very few, other times looks like a globe.
Enjoy the breed!

Yes! I got my Wellie a year ago and I wasn't sure about the speckles... they DO wash off if you rub, which I thought was really strange. She is a GREAT layer though, with 5-7 eggs a week. Too bad she's on strike right now. Barely molting, but the pins on her face are enough I suppose. Sigh. Looking forward to more speckled eggs!

Thats awsome! I wanted a dark egg layer and almost went with marans, but read wellie's lay just as dark if breed for it and have spots. I also read wellie's laid more eggs than marans so I went with them. Good to hear you get as many as my rireds laid! Hopefully mine do too.

Beer can, If it was your Wellie that just started laying can you tell me how old she is. I have one that over 7 months and has not laid one egg yet. Just wondering when they start.
