The Welsummer Thread!!!!

As I'm trying to figure out which Roo to keep, what should I be looking for? One guy has the darker comb and darker red hackles. Better choice? I'm not looking to show and I'm not sure if I'll keep either as I go forward--just excited that someone wants one of these guys so I'd like to get him to his new home. Thanks!

Shoot. Pics went out of order.
Oh well.
Tried to throw a pic in of a pullet--Welsummer or Brown Leghorn?

Looks like it has the white earlobes of a brown leghorn, wellies have brown earlobes. I also have both, they look alike color wise, but my wellie is more round and doesn't go nuts when I open the coop door like the brown leghorns.

Quote: Welsummer earlobes have red skin like the face, comb and wattles.
The ears are covered with brownish feathers(hair?).

Sarahandbray's pics are not clear enough for me to see her pullet's earlobes...or they are too young for them to be big enough to see clearly.

I started with three wellie roos and planned on keeping the best. It wasn't hard to choose, the smallest of the three had the best body shape and bright coloration. Even though he was one of the smaller roos (only the polish and a white leghorn was smaller) the two other two wellies were the size of the RIR and dull in color, the red was bigger and I had two white cochins that were huge yet the one wellie I kept was the boss roo! When the others learned to gang up on him I knew they had to go into the freezer, didn't want any of them to rip out his pretty tail feathers like he already had theirs.
You might have to wait until they are a little older to decide. They look young yet.
Check out the pics on http://chickenaddictsanonymous.weebly.com/welsummer.html to see what wellies are supposed to look like. I got mine from Meyers Hatchery, one of three pullets looks correct (two had reddish neck feathers like in his pic) one out of three roos looked correct, the one I kept.

Your right I guess I don't know my chicken anatomy! I just looked at my BLH compared to my wellie, both have brown ears, but the leghorns have white earlobes, don't even notice lobes on the wellie. When I first looked at the last pic of Sarah's pullet I thought it looked whitish under the ear, but now I think it is just the pic. I would say they are all wellies now. That last pic the bird looks big and fluffy, not tight feathered like a leghorn, wellies are loose feathered. I'd say nice neck coloration also, two of my pullets actually had neck feathers closer in color of the pics of her roos.

I didn't want to clog up this thread with tons of pics of my three Welsummer Roos, but would you all be so kind as to pick which one you would keep if you had to keep one? I have two very nice folks that want a Welsummer Roo this weekend, so even though they're young, I feel like now is the best chance of them finding a great home instead of their way into someone's freezer!! Thanks!!

They are far too young to evaluate. If you have some people that want one, just pick one to give away.

Thanks...that's what I was afraid of. *Sigh*
Well for the sake do all three Roos, I'll just go with my gut and pick the darkest Roo in color and comb. He also, incidentally, is the nicest and most tame.

The other two are officially sold for $10 and $15 each! And to great homes with a plethora of Welsummer hens to romance ;)

The one I kept was the most agressive towards the other roos, but was nice to us, the others kept going after my kids, except for the two cochin roos I had, wish they were pullets, they make great setters. Now that he is the only roo he is really nice, but does show his dominance over his hens with his sideways rooster dance around them.
