:) his name is cloud! He is an registered American Indian pony. He is appaloosa/quarter pony cross... The appaloosa ee know for sure the quarter pony is a guess. He only stands 14 hands but is built like a tank! Stocky and sturdy! I love him!:)
Wow your eggs are quorgous! I have a mixed flock and currently I'm getting egg colors from white, green/blue and all shade of Brown or tented up to my wyandottes....they are my darkest Brown eggs in getting right now. I saw welsummer listed in the dark egg category and hear that most the time there speckled so I just had to have some!!!!! The thing is I only have room for 1 or 2 to add to my flock with out over crowding so I need either feed store chicks or a very local breeder so I can pick them up and I'm struggking to find any near me. I'm in nc between triad and asheboro.

wow, I didn't realize how long its been since I've been on BYC. So glad to see so many new people on this thread - Guess I shouldn't take 6 month breaks in the future!

I think the breeders left when the hatchery's started churning out Welsumers.

yeah, its a little frustrating to watch - but I have to remember, I started with hatchery stock before I realized the difference too. Hopefully people who buy from a hatchery will get curious about the breed, learn more and start over with breeder stock. It also depends on what people's goals are. Not everyone needs to be serious about the breed, some people just want a variety of eggs.

Well I'm looking for breeder quality, but I'm have absolutely no luck finding breeders in my area so I will take hatchery quality so I can have a mixture of egg color. I don't breed or show, just have back yard pets that I adore. But I see now that this is normally not the right thread for me, don't feel very welcome on here...

Quote: Very true...and I have no problem with that....It's just that alot of folks will get hatchery birds start reproducing them and call themselves 'breeders'.

There's a wide gap between folks breeding to SOP for showing in sanctioned shows and 4h shows giving prizes for hatchery birds.
Most consumers and BYCer's don't know the difference.

Beaker Farm in SC might not be too far from you. They ship day old chicks occasionally. you may want to contact them. They are listed on the Welsummer Club of North America breeder list. Whitmore farms ships chicks as well, and there is a breeder in Alabama that ships adults and chicks.

But, don't feel like you have to buy from a breeder. If you just want birds for a mixed flock, hatchery birds are just fine.
