The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I'm in NC and looking for welsummer hatching eggs. Willing to have them shipped if need be. I currently have 1 welsummer hen and looking to expand them. I love the dark colored eggs.

I have 3 Welsummer cockerels right now, about ~3.5 months old. What age would be a good age to take pictures and get opinions on the better looking of the 3?

I've tried digging in here, looking at previous pictures from others, but trying to find comments about what looks good/what doesn't is hard. And right now we have about 2 feet of snow, so no one wants to be outside currently for a nice picture.

4-6 months can show any glaring faults compared the SOP.
Depends on your goals.

Need clear pics, side-front-back views taken at ground level...and top view. Clear close pics of head too.

I got my 1st Wellie egg yesterday. I don't know exactly how old she is because the feed store had her in one of those 8-12week pullet cages. I guesstimate her to be about 36weeks old. This is the first wellie I've had & she is really starting to get pretty. The egg wasnt the classic rich brown color with dark spots that we'd hoped for, but I'm just glad shes finally laying. No 2nd egg today... Maybe she hid it from me.

My Welsummer 'Wendy' lays darker brown freckled eggs, but not as dark as I had hoped. Her body shape is more angular/less rounded than I had seen in pics. She is a hatchery girl so perhaps the more developed breeding lines produce the darker eggs. I will say she is my smartest and friendliest hen! Always a nice greeting from her, and she makes a noise like a Tribble.

here is Wendy trying to squeeze into an occupied nestbox.

I'm trying to candle welsummer eggs. I am not able to get through the shell with my candler and it is a good on from what I have thought. Does anyone have any other methods of candling the eggs? I just end up candling them at day 18. If I cannot see through it then it is a keeper and if I can see through it is a clear. I just cannot see anything at day 7.
