The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Does anyone have any fertile eggs? I live in central California. My very first hem was a wellsummer. She was my top hen ! We trusted each other through 5 clutches. I absolutely know I will never replace her! My neighbors pit bull jumped a 12 foot fence and took out 4 of my ladies

she went first trying to play the rooster roll. I had just walked in house with my bird dog to grab her a bone. She stays out and watches them everyday . All it took was tops 8 min for this dog to kill my hens and all for sport ! My second in the pecking order sure put up A fight! She saved many others I believe. Unfortunately I had to put her down. All while looking around yard yelling for my husband no to get the dog! Then our wonderful neighbors yelled some teSl nice things over the fence if you get my drift ?'! Come to find out the same dog killed two bunnies that same morning. So there is my story

I cried over pepper

I really want to hatch some more of her breed !!!! I have incubator and a few hens who would love to go broody! If anyone has any eggs ease PM me. Thank you a million!
Note: I take very good care of my flock !!!! They are very loved as well!

Boy, is that sad! So sorry for your loss. I don't have fertile eggs, too bad. Are you going to do something about that dog?

Thank god the dog was removed! My husband told them he would call if the dog was not gone within the hour. Pepper had tried to go broody 2 days before but I broke her

now I regret doing it! As for my dog, she would have been torn apart buy a pit. Even though she's big but older.
So many thoughts went through my head ..... What if? When I started with my flock I never thought I would love them so much! Of course more than others. She was the best! Trusted me fully! I luckily have a spitting image of her daughter ! She's not a full breed. She even lays same eggs but not much on the broody side yet. Not like her momma! Pepper would raise her chicks for 10-12 weeks. Here I go on with a novel! Sorry !! If anyone can push me in the right direction to get ahold of some eggs I would be forever grateful.

That is awful... I would call no matter what... Because later its your word against theirs... What else will that dog kill. Someone's child ?

I cant help you with egg info, but wanted to tell you how very sorry I am for your tragic loss! It sounds like your girls had a great home & were very happy!

I understand neighbors pit bulls coming and killing flocks all to well. The day before Easter, guess who came over? 3 immediately dead (my 3 favorite) and the fourth was heavily injured, died 2 days later. One was my welsummer named sunny. It was a sad week in our house.

I can't imagine how awful that was for you and the flock. Did you report the dog?

I'm also in CA, but my birds are all molting, so I don't have any fertile eggs at the moment. I will be reducing my adult bird numbers as soon as they start laying again, and preparing for this years breeding flocks. I'll have fertile eggs closer to spring time.

I'm very sorry to hear of your losses.

Wow, what a wonderful thread! You peeps are very kind ! I'm sorry to hear other stories it's sad! Never in my life would I have thought I would miss a hen! I know it's a dogs instinct. It's just the dogs who have not been treated right and or are breed for fighting. I feel bad for the dogs as well. When a owner can't be responsible. Then we all loose our little friends. As we all know Intel you have chickens you don't understand the love you put into your flock
