The Welsummer Thread!!!!

What I look at also now is the legs and feet. My boys had these really thick 'ankles' and long toes that are a real give away long before the black breast feathers come in or the wattles develop.

Ok. Here are the 3 chicks that were sold to me as Welsummers.
They all looked pretty typical with chipmunk patterning, eyeliner and deep V head markings. But recently some have said that they are not Welsummers and appear to be a Barnyard mix of sorts. I'd like your opinions

Here they were at 2 days old

And in hindsight, this is probably the one the turned out to be our roo... Less eye liner and less clear V

Wellies or not, they are turning out really pretty and are a great addition to our flock, but we were hoping to for some darker eggs to round out our basket. (We also have 2 each EE, Australorps and Golden sex links) Is there still hope for some Famous Welsummer eggs from our 2 girls?

Agrees, not Wellies.
Head triangle edge on chicks are not straight.
Head/neck plumage too dark on 7wo's.

Lots of different chicks have chipmunk stripes, eyeliners and head triangles.

Your little pullets look to be about the same age as mine. These are Welsummers...

Thanks for the confirmation. We are new to chick raising and will know better what to look for next time.
Luckily this is just or fun, so breed doesn't really matter and we only paid $3 per chick from a local breeder, so no real losses.

I guess it'll be fun to see what happens from here.

Quote: Unless they told you Welsummer crosses or mixes....I would not buy from them again.
Sorry, have a pet peeve about misuse of pure breed names for sake of sales.

They do look like they could be a Wellie cross, because of the dark yellow legs(at least on the cockerel).....will be interesting to see what color eggs you get.

I'am anxious to see how they lay as well. Keep us posted on how they do for you.

Yeah. We got EEs, BAs and golden sexlinks -2 each 2 week old sexed pullets- from Dare 2 Dream farms in Lompoc CA and had a great experience, they are all lovely, true to breed and WERE all girls! We wanted a darker egg producer to round out the basket and finally found a local breeder that said she had Welsummers, she gave us 3 for the price of 2 incase one was a roo (which he was)

We are contacting her today to see if we can get some more info, and if she did in fact cross for increase production or something. But I agree, they should have not been marketed as pure Wellies if that was the case.

A few people on a breed/gender thread suspect Welsummer/Production Red Cross, which wouldn't be the worst thing I suppose.

I will definitely update as they mature and post pics of their eggs

You know...their coloring is just a bit more red like RIR red or NH red on some. I agree. I think they are a barnyard mix but maybe just one generation down. I will say, they will make for some nice birds production wise. And you might find their "ink jets" working to give you a darker egg, nonetheless. You never know. They are lovely and you'll have some nice birds. too bad the folks couldn't be more straight forward on what they're selling though. Pretty Cheesy.
