The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Her eggs ARE dark! Wellies can lay from a lighter brown, to light brown with dark splotches or dark speckles, or half brown/half light brown -- all depending on the brown pigmentation that occurs prior to the hen laying her egg. Our Marans would lay a different pattern of speckles or solid eggs depending on how the egg traveled the oviduct and got pigmented. Very pretty eggs -- both of them!

Interesting! I did notice a couple eggs that were sort of splotchy medium/dark brown last week (I ate them, sorry ;), and I had a couple lighter eggs with speckles that I assumed were from one of my other mixed breeds -- I'll have to keep an eye out for variations. I know these dark ones are her, since she was the first to lay. I also had an egg that was medium brown with light speckles! Grab bag of mutt chicken eggs. Ha.

Sounds like fun trying to figure who layed what! I aim at having different egg-color layers so we know who is laying what. Even with 2 Silkies - one lays a glossy pink pointy egg while the other lays a rounder matte cream egg. The Breda lays white. I hope to get a couple Dominiques next Spring so we can get some brown eggs. I haven't had brown eggs since we re-homed our bully Marans 3 yrs ago - she was the one who layed a different egg each time. Sometimes half light/half dark brown, light brown with dark splotches, dark brown solid, tiny little speckles all over the shell, you just never knew what was next. I would love to try a Wellie for the darker egg but decided on the lighter-weight Dominique to keep all my breeds under-5-lbs around the Silkies. I had too much problems with bigger breeds intimidating the little Silkies. Doms don't lay dark eggs but they will at least be some shade of pink/brown.

Wow, they look great, and that rooster is

Thank you CuzChickens. I got them as hatching eggs from a breeder this year in southern part of the state. She does a great job on selection. She told me that I should consider giving him back to her. LOL. So it's a pretty nice compliment on him...I know i lucked out with that Cockerel.

Nice looking Welsummers in your Run there.

Lol, if I were to give that rooster back, I would charge $$$ for that bird!

So....I think (fingers crossed) that I have a broody Silver Laced Wyandotte hen. She's been hanging out in the nesting boxes an awful lot,and tonight she as sleeping on some eggs. So I went ahead and slipped some WelsummerxBuff Orp eggs under her. Any idea what the chicks will be like?egg color? Adult feathering?

We have a now 11 week old Welsummer pullet, Hachi. She is my son's girl..he plans to show her in 4h and also in the state fair. She's so beautiful, unbelievable forager in our subdivision backyard. She can jump roughly a foot off of the ground to get things off of bushes or to snag a mealworm from your hand. She HATES being held. Just not her thing. Our two buffs don't mind being toted around, but Hachi throws tantrums. She's also the boss of the yard. She fluffed all up, even on her neck, and chased off a small finch out of my yard. A finch. CHased it off. I only have a pic of her at 6 weeks and maybe a couple of weeks ago. I'll post a more up to date pic later. She's pretty cool.

@kadavis08 Very nice birds. I think you'll find your welsummer, even though aloof, your character of the bunch....and bonus: She'll be laying you a dark or spotted egg which will give you beautiful interest in the egg carton. They seem to really be sweet docile birds. Mine don't want to be picked up really, but just friendly enough. After a few years of chickening I've decided that's best for us all. Albeit, the pullets become really friendly when they are laying. Their food drive goes way up. LOL. So she may surprise you once she gets going with some laying and her friendliness.

Go CUBS!

She was trying to be crafty tonight and dodge being put up for the evening. Ran in between the privacy fence and the coop before she realized she couldn't go all the way through. Apparently chickens don't have reverse. She waited for me to scoot it out from the fence, pick her up, and get her out. I was surprised...assumed she'd lose her marbles and maybe hurt herself. shady little thing.
