The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Thanks! The coop is from the Roots, Coops and More . It's turning out to be a great choice for our small flock. I'm still debating whether I should try for olive eggers or start over with Welsummers next year. It could be fun to start my own "breed". As tempting as it is to expand, I'm really trying to keep it down to five chickens - and I really, really, really like Welsummers.

verygoodchicks, most of us (but not all) on BYC have found it VERY difficult to limit out craving for more and more members of the flock. Just a mild warning !

The same thing kept happening to me! No matter where I got eggs from- all boys hatched. Glad you got yourself some EEs too though. Love the coop!

My broody wellie girl just hatched 3 olive eggers. I had only given her 3 eggs because I have sooooo many broodies- nobody was laying but the EEs. They're so cute- like little wellies with cheeks. Pics soon

They are looking quite good I must say!!! I can see 2 bantams in the pic, both look like hens, couldnt spot the rooster.

You got a good batch! Most of my hatches have been over 60% HENS... Some more than that!

Nate

Yes the ratio of hens are high in this batch, either way I am pretty happy with it! Whatever you got there Nate, hang on to that flock because too many of them produced more girls than boys.

I had my ratio of Welsummers, and got mostly boys.

Wow, that is crazy! I originally was going to call one of the nankins Willow. But since she was the only welsummer that hatched out of that bunch, I thought she was special. I picked the name Willow because a fellow BYCer/FB friend recently had her dog pass away and in memorial I choose that name.

You know..they do say great minds think alike.

Flower, who are these crazy people you are talking of? Someone is actually able to limit themselves with chickens? Thats unheard of!!! I want to meet these people.

But really..it IS very hard to limit yourself. I started off with wanting JUST ONE chicken. Then I found out they are companion animals so I had to get another one. Then I found out about EEs. So in my first order, it turned from just one chick to 6 of them. Now I have 19 with 15 more in the bator. Shhh dont tell hubby though.

I couldn't limit myself either... Welsummers, Marans, Barnevelders, Lavender Ameraucanas, next up Delawares!
I tried to seek medical help for it once and when the doctor asked me to explain why I was there too see her......I opened my mouth and this is the sound that came out........"bawkbawk bagawk bawk bawk baw bawk!" I think I pretty much realized there was no help for this addiction and that it was going to be a VERY long long road to recovery.

Just recently I am learning to accept that there is no recovery. But once you can accept that concept well than you can just accept and then well nothing seems like a problem except NOT having enough run and coop space.

Oh my ! the girls are so big ! Soon enough I'll be finding those funny brown ovoids in the straw !

Haha, I know what your talking about. I have a couple different chicken shirts I wear to work and then two BYC stickers on the back of my truck. I get people asking about my shirts all the time. A couple of weeks ago I bought a chicken coop off craigslist. Well they were moving and the only time I had to go and get it was when I was on my lunch break. Talk about being the talk of work. I heard people in the halls asking about whos truck it was with the 'dog house' in the back. I had people asking me if I could show them in the inside of it when I told them it wasnt a dog house, but a chicken coop. Its one of those chick-n-barn(yes, p.o.crap's-I know this now) one. You would think the chicken shirts and two stickers on the back of my truck would give it away, but I guess not. I never had anyone ask to buy eggs from me other then the 4 women I work with. Well since all this with the eggs going on right now. I have people coming up to me all the time now asking if I sell eggs. Told DH we could be rich if only I had more chickens. Start selling the eggs $20 dozen. But he wasnt hearing it.

Just like everyone else Im trying to get a nice colorful basket of eggs. Adults love the different colors, but the most fun I get is out of the kids. Seeing their faces light up when they see all the different 'cool' colors. Makes my day. Now dont get me wrong, I also have to like what the chicken looks like. I dont care if I got a hot pink egg, I would never own a necked neck. Words cant even describe it. Kinda a
