The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I hope you got through to him.

I can't help but laugh at my boy, Moose right now. He's molted out all but 2 of his tailfeathers. Boy does he look funny! It's not stopping him from doing his "duties" though.

There are so many posts I cant weed through them all.
I am going to a farm to get some 5-7 month old pullets. They are wellsummer and wellsummer mixes ( roo is a well). She said most are not laying yet... I dont want to be dupped... can you distinguish those gorgeous boys from the gals at this age really well. What should I be looking for. The hard part is if they are just at the point of laying, their combs and wattles should be big and red... correct?
Any pics of birds around that age?
These are my first chicks so want to make sure I am getting hens!

thanks

Love the speckles jenandnaomi!

krstip~
My boy in the photos on the previous page is 6 mos. old. By the ages of the birds you described you will be able to tell the difference. Can't help you out with the mixed Wellie birds as other factors depending on the breed they have been mixed with can hinder appearances and traits of the Welsummers but with that said still by 5-7 mos. a person should be able to easily pick out the roosters no matter what cross they are from or even if they are pure breed.

I don't have a photo handy or uploaded of one of my 6 mos old girls or I would post it for you.

Good luck with them, Wellies IMO are a wonderful breed of birds that I cannot live without.

a sure fire way of telling from the boys vs girls are their breast feathers, boys, are black with brown and girls are salmon colored.

As for the mixes, it is hard unless the Welsummer color gene is dominant and you can take it from the boys and girls. The boys would have much bigger wattles and combs. AND longer pointer tails.

I am doing the first part of sorting thru the Welsummer contest pictures and I have MORE to look at! For the WCNA if anyone wanted to know...

Here are the photos I need permission to "lift" from these members.....

Chicks:
#2 chick from Cloverleaf Farms
Lauralou the 8/23/09 #17 Welsummer contest pic of Rooster-Man
Tailfeathers Martha from Welsummer Contest

more coming up! I think I better post it somewhere and have all the WCNA members take a vote on it. I LOVE details like Tailfeather's Martha has that you can see every partridge pattern on his hen in a very close up profile.

The more detailed it is, the better I like it! And better for the wCNA club. As for the chicks, I would love to get more detailed chick colors on them.

Pinkchicks' 2010 chicks with green confetti grass pictures are great to use as well........ ON this Welsummer thread.......

Lester's roosters

Pinkchick's Odin

More to come LOL!

Want to include JenandNoami's pretty speckled egg......even it is a bit light but neverthanless such a pretty setting! I must say it is either the camera or the egg itself is light. I would put that egg on the light end of the spectrum of Welsummer eggs! Like our own Welsummer egg shell color chart!
