Nate~

Forgive me....it has been a very long time since I have been in 4-H, do you know what the age requirements are for that?

Kids 3rd grade and up through highschool and maybe 1 year past are considered
Regular 4-H members and can pick any projects. Kids kindergarten to 2nd grade are Cloverbuds and pick from a
Specfic list of projects depending on the county and or state 4-H rules

If I remember right, Cloverbuds, like my daughter is 6 years old, our 4H will not allow anyone less than eight years of age to do any type of poultry show. I don't think it is fair but thats the way it goes. However I got plenty of poultry folks in here that does 4H including where my daughter goes for riding lessons which they do 4H for horses and livestock.

Way to go Nate! I love this idea...great promotion for the breed and for the breeder as well!

Can kids younger than 8 years old show in open classes either at fair or poultry shows?
Maybe knowing that would give you an idea of what age to start at. Of course a 7 or 8 year old
Is also able to print an essay easier than a younger child might. I know that my DS(5) is excited to
be in 4-H and wants to know when he can show too! He enjoys helping and having chickens to name
and call his own.

Hope this helps and it sounds like a great idea,Nate!

Age and individual maturity is a very important factor here IMO for safety reasons. My kids are all grown and I didn't have chickens when they were young so I can't really comment on chickens and children. I have a grand-daughter in law, she is 2 and tries and most times succeeds to kiss every animal here. I have to make sure every chicken and chick and egg is looked up tight when she comes over. Yes the eggs...... a couple months ago she was banging pots and pan lids together to drive her mommy nutz and then she found Nannerz' (that is me) eggs..oooooooo no she didn't.........oooooooooyes she did........she reached right into the eggs I had just brought in and before her mother could stop her she threw 3 of them on the floor!!!!! Of course they were nice dark eggs! TOTALLY Nannerz fault cause Nannerz left 'em with in her little reach. She is only allowed full access to the cats and dogs. She loves animals and shreaks in delight when one comes into sight. This is a great topic guys and gals! :

Given the fact that my kids are younger I can just picture the scene at your house!

Our youngest was 4 yrs old when we started with chickens and I watched him like a hawk around the chicks but he was always so careful and gentle but I can see where it does depend on age and individual maturity. Thanks for the good laugh this am!

Hens~

Your Welcome for the laugh....glad it made you smile. She makes me laugh! Oh and Nannerz is the one who taught her to bang pot and pan lids together.

Now she does it at home too! I love when they are this age......sooooooooo many things we can teach them while they visit....then send them home with Mom and Dad. She loves flicking cherrioes off the high chair tray too.

Pinkchick and others, do check out your pictures in the WCNA!!!!! It is still incompleted and need names, or corrections or anything you want to add. I need to know how to put SMALL letterings on the side of the photograph because I would have to type out bird's owner in the listings if it is more than one owner. And I could not have it go up and down like some professionals do when they put photos up. Is there a way I can MOVE the name on the right hand side of photo in an up and down manner?

http://wcna.webs.com/aboutus.htm

Click under Eggs, Chicks, Pullets, and Cockerals...all the photos should be in there. I love the details of Royce's Martha.....she is a beauty!
