The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I usually dont have a big issue with younger ones getting beat up. Once breeding season is over, I just open all the pens and let them out into the big one. But when I am putting the 4-6 and 6-8 week old chicks outside, they go into a 4X8 unit, and it is left cracked open(about 4-5 inches) so that way then can get in there and get the chick starter, and the adult breeders that are in the same big pen are not allowed to eat the chick starter.

Depends on your breeds of chickens that you have as well... Some of the most docile breeds can also have a cranky rooster or hen!? The best advice I think anyone could give, is try it. I usually do it in the morning, that way I can watch for anything out of the ordinary, but this time of year hormone levels seem to be down, and everyone gets along!

Today we will be putting the 2 Wellie boys in with the older boys

there are enough of us around to keep an eye on things. We will also be dusting all our birds today since the wild birds come in and out of the outside pens.

So far so good, we put the 2 boys in and there was very little fighting, the kids were also out there treating all the birds with small pieces of bread and they love that! I do think the Wellie boys are a bit mad at being separated from their girls! We did move our Andalusian group into one pen by themselves and when DH move one of the girls, she laid an egg in his hand-I think both of them were surprised!

Hope everyone is having a nice sunny day to enjoy!
