The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Yes, I am very excited to have them judged and examined by a 'real dutch breeder'. I love working with my welsummers, they are by far my favoriote breed that I have ever raised. Even tho I do have a love for Russian Orloffs.

NATE what is your interest in the Russian Orloff ? I ask because they are so different from the big but subtle colored and calm Welsummer .

I just love the look and the color. I had them from Urch poultry once, and they were of great quality, now I cant find any from the Urch line.

Duane Urch no longer raises the orloffs, and dont seem to be able to give me any information to find any from his flock.

Yes, but I would rather not get Orloff eggs shipped in... I wanted someone that sells chicks. Might have to go with Erhard in the spring...

Wished they will ship chicks. I know Erhard is NPIP while Royce is not (yet). If you can convience Erhard to ship chicks just for you once, it would be interesting. I know he does not. It would not hurt to TRY. If he does not want to ship chicks because of the losses, let him know that any losses would be yours and you would not hold him accountable. And you would ship him a chick box, all expenses paid LOL! I know a breeder out in OR shipped his chickens and I got them within 18 hours from start to finish. I do not see this as a problem.

Nate, if you really want some Orloff chicks, email Erhard and ask him just as Robin mentioned. You might also let him know that I asked you to email him as he knows I don't make a regular habit of sending people to ask for something he doesn't do. And that I thought he might make a one-time exception as long as you don't publicize that he ships chicks. That will probably help.

Also, I don't have Orloffs. I had some Mahogany Russian Orloff (MRO) chicks from Erhard but lost them. I will be getting more from him - probably at the show in a few weeks. But I am only going to have those. The MRO is not an accepted variety - yet. I just really like the looks of them and as far as I know, Erhard has the only established flock of MROs in the country. I finally convinced him this last year to start selling some of them because they would all be gone if God forbid anything should ever happen to his flock.

It will probably be some time before I get NPIP certified if I ever do. WA State passed a new law last year that makes it cost-prohibitive for me to get certified. It's $85/hr to have the vet come to my house and that starts from the time he leaves his office in Oly which is about 4 hours away. Add another 2-2.5 hours for testing birds here plus the return trip and you can see why I'm not doing it. Do you realize how many eggs and birds I'd have to sell just to pay for the certification?

God Bless,

I will have to do that. I wouldnt even mind having him ship MRO and SPR and whatever else as welsummers or anything. but I would definately like to get a full box of RO's! I see more looses with the eggs, as hatch rates are never that high! So shipping chicks would at lease give them a better chance, and I would do everything on my end to have them shipped. I have boxes coming, and everything as I will be NPIP this year in March sometime.

Uh oh Nate! Your boy started to crow...my hubby heard him weakly crow...

Said that he sounded like he stuck his head in a toliet water and crowed LOL! I told hubby "Oh, that BAD?!!"

Well that boy will be big, despite of a few tail feathers LOL! Poor thing looks like it was moth eaten but I am sure with hi pro Purina feed, along with fancy mancy yogurt and oatmeal, he will grow them out FAST and beautiful! He is gonna be BIG!

As for the Orloff chicks, it won't hurt to try to make it as an exception. Royce, I wished you could have snuck them in the mail box and send them on to Nate LOL! Once you get on your feet, I am sure you would go for the NPIP certification eventually. Could it be possible for you to include your chicks with Erhard's chicks? I do not see how it could differ if all the chicks were hatched out by Erhard if he was to incubate your eggs unless NPIP is very strict about that.
