The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I went to the New England Poultry Congress today and only saw ONE Welsummer! How sad. We have two Wellies we got from My Pet Chicken (don't laugh.. we are new to chickens and hubby wasn't ready to find out what a true SQ chicken would cost). I took lots of pics of the Wellie at the show to see how our girls might compare. My (8 yr old special needs) daughter just joined 4H and will be showing in the summer.

No hurry here, been busy here too!

Pinkchick! when you are done with the incubator, ship it to me LOL! Oh my hubby won't like that LOL!

Been making plans with Nate for my daughter's school, there will be an auction to support the school and help out the tution and the upkeep $$$$ for the school. They made a list of all the auction ideas and I thought under the "basket" section (food, soaps, bath treatments, etc.) and I thought why not get something for kids (and parents LOL), a basket of Backyard Chicken basket! I will buy the basket, fake grass, a new "Backyard Chickens for Dummies" book, a chick waterer, chick feeder, a five lb bag of chick feed and put in a gift certificate from Nate for 15 chicks to the lucky bidder!

THANK YOU NATE for your kindness of donating chicks for this auction! The person who is doing the auction thing for the school, her daughters are into 4H for chickens and horses and she will tell the others about this "special package". YOU ROCK!

If there are other things I can get from the feed store to add into the basket, let me know!!!!!!!
When I get things together I will take some pictures and get some feedbacks from the public.

Hogback, Welcome to this forum! Cochin378, you wont regret getting some Welsummers, they are better egg layers than Marans, even the breeders are working on getting the production going in their flock. Whitmore Farms are good but from what I have been hearing lately, their eggs are a bit smaller than large eggs but the color is the same as terra cotta and it can vary from bird to bird, whether they will have speckles or not.

I have heard the same thing - I think my eggs are pretty big! They are bigger than my Sussex, and the same size as the marans. So I think they are a LARGE/X-LARGE!

YOU ARE VERY WELCOME ON DONATING SOME CHICKS!!! I DO WHAT I CAN!!! IT WILL HELP GET THE BREED AT SHOWS AND PEOPLE INTERESTED IN THEM! I WILL GET A GIFT CERTIFICATE OUT TO YOU AS SOON AS I CAN. ALONG WITH A FLYER, OTHER PROMO STUFF FOR MY FARM, and some BUSINESS CARDS!

Nate

Love this idea!!!!! Way To Go you 2!!!!!

WELCOME to the Welsummer Thread Cochin!!!! Sounds like a great coop and I think that you should just forget about the other breeds and finish filling it up with Wellies! Your neighbors will love the beautiful Welsummer eggs sitting next to the blue eggs in their cartons.

Your Wellies will charm your socks off! I don't know which will hook you first, the egg or the birds beauty. They are great foragers, the roos are great protectors of their flocks, they are not flighty and they are not aggressive birds. The girls are great layers and the eggs are good sized eggs. They will even sing you an egg song everyday too! All that in a chicken you say???
Yep! All that in a chicken!!!!

You keeping all those babies????

I hope not! But, if I can't sell them all I will be replacing the last of the light egg layers with all dark layers, so maybe some of the little girlies might just have to stick around. I only have 6 light colored egg layers left in any of my flocks, Olive Eggers aside, they don't count....this is chicken math at work here,

anyway my goal is to have only dark eggs and olive eggs.......I've even given the boot to all of my Ameraucana's...I'm that hooked on dark eggs and olive eggs and the birds aren't that bad to look at either!

Please do share it on here! We love to see Welsummers in shows!

And by any chance, do you happen to know who was the owner?

:)

You can have a mix of anything to get to the 15 - it is just a minimum for shipping reasons. But I dont have a minimum per breed like some people do.

Hope you get some wellies!!! :)

Nate

Good to know Nate. If I can't get some eggs from you, I may have to place a chick order. Moose needs a harem.

Hi Nate. I will find a way to make this work! I posted on the Colorado thread too, and already have some interest in splitting an order. I posted a link to your website, and the Colorado folks are drooling over your ducks, too! Expect to get an order from me soon!

Hi to pinkchick, Hens & Roos, and EweSheep. Thanks for the welcome! I spent several evenings reading this whole thread, getting more and more attached to Welsummers. I love the photos. I feel like I know you guys and your birds!

I just got back from Habitat Restore with some building materials for my planned coop. BYC is great - so much information. I have changed my coop plans about a dozen times, because I keep finding a new touch I just have to add. I have big plans for my coop, but need to get it up and running before any little chicks will be coming my way. I will post some photos once I have some babies to show off - but for now, I am going to lurk and learn.

Thanks!

-Jamie

I am so happy to hear that this thread has made you feel this way, Jamie. This BYC Place and BYC People....kinda KICK BUTT if you ask me!!!!
