Jenn, you are the lucky few that ended up having terra cotta eggs! Not very many hatchery Welsummers could have that egg color and get by with it LOL!

Louie, it probably was best for Maple to go. When you have too many roos, the dynamics changes in the flock and it is not pretty at all.

Well, we weathered the storm, had NO power outages, just a flicker here and there and things still running. Hubby could not go to work today because of the ice underneath it and alot of snow on the streets has not been plowed up yet. The city is focused on gettting the main streets cleared before they go on secondary streets and alleys. However hubby did shoveled from the doorway to the chicken coop for me to take care of them. They are all warm and cozy as they could be!

I agree, too many roosters is tough on everyone. We had 4 roosters in with 11 girls, but only 6 are of laying age. The extra 3 were starting to mate, and it wasn't pretty for the hens or the young roosters. (head olive egger roo didn't appreciate these teenagers messing with his girls)

Now we're down to 2, and if my DH's friend doesn't take the other spare soon, he'll be getting a one way ticket to freezer camp also.

I know that we can tell the boys from the girls at an early age by the eye marking and the v on top of the head but has anyone ever watched to see if the girl's tail feathers come in quicker than the boys? We only have the 1 girl this hatch so we can't watch and see if there is any difference. The reason I ask is because we have Andalusians chicks from that same hatch and 2 have tail feathers and 2 are just starting- guess I will have to pop over the the Blue Andalsuian thread and ask.
