The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Other than gender (a real plus indeed for hatching Wellies), what do you breeders look for with chicks so that they can be culled (by selling chicks locally to folks who don't breed them) from the breeding program as early as possible? Perhaps leg color?

question for you expert breeders. I have hatched several clucthes of wellies,Sept. Oct. 2 in nove. 2 in dec, 1 jan, 2 so far this month. My first will be coming into lay in few weeks(i Hope). I am trying to decide which roo to put back with the original hens, and will mate the dad back to some daughters. A coule of the roos, which have nice color and type,5 point combs, nice size, but carry some red feathers in thier breast and down on thier side above thier thighs. I have nice yellow legs, no stubs in any of my birds. I do have a roo, that looks like the one on Will Morrows page, but that is just too red in my opinion. However , will these redder roos, dilute the color on the hens to much, or will it lighten some of the "darker hens. I am curious . I will try to get some picturs in the nect day or so, as it has finnally warmed up here. I am also starting to hatch from another line, and am ecited about this one. The first line is Grisham hens, coverd with roo from a pivate line. I have posted picts of that roo, but will try to get better pics as well. I have 1 hen in my second line. She is froma calicowood hen. cover with a barber roo, I really like her. I hacthed my fist chicks from her last sat, 20 more to day. have 4 of 5 set for each of the next 3 sat. I will switch my roos today or tommorow and cover her with my original roo. This roo came from Bob Fugate in Kansas. I have a friend that has some from as well, and they are some of the most consistant in type and color with terra cotta spekled eggs I ahve seen. In my converstion with him, he did not remember his origanl stock from, but has had them for some 20 plus years with no new blood brought in. I may not have been clear, but will put a son , back over the original hens. Most of thse are from 1 hen, as she layed a better egg than the other hen. I will be pair or tri mating only from now on, so I know which hen or pair at least is coverd with which roo,
I wish 20 today. 2 today from my calicowood/barber hen, 2 last week,4or 5 set for each of the next 3. She is a pretty consitant layer, about 4 or 5 eggs a week. She was hatched mid may and started laying in mid november.

Okay HappyChooks!!!! Your eggs are all ready and packed! I know it's early, but I couldn't get anymore in the box. Good Luck with them and I hope they all arrive safe and sound.

too much red chests on the males is a no no to the standard. From what I've heard, it probably would make redder on his daughter's chests. I am not 100 percent sure yet.

Just use the correct roos from darkest eggs for your breeding stock along with the proper color, comb and leg colors. No whites on them at all.

I love my Calicowood hen, she is so pretty!

My wellies seem to be fast hatchers too. They don't mess around in the pipping and zipping! Kim shipped my eggs out, so I'm waiting to get them!
