The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Chickenfish,"my wife shut me down. Will some of you lady chicken owners send me the secret code so I can convince my wife that we should get at least three more?"

I have several suggestions.

1) You need to find out what her MAIN OBJECTION is to you having "just 3 more" chickens.

Is it care, cost, appearance, noise, etc. Maybe there is something you could do better...

2) When it comes to SECRET CODES, every lady is different in what she is willing to 'trade on'. Seems to me an IPAD isn't cheap!

My hubby is the 'no livestock' person here. NOTHING will make him budge on it, so I just have to ignore it and get them anyway.....I just try to keep the odor, noise, objectionable parts away from him so he isn't reminded I have them......Just served him eggs for breakfast, too!

Good Luck! Just make sure she doesn't learn to butcher them and serve them up to you for dinner:/

well, I have just been informed that I have a Welsummer chick! She came out of the assorted pullets bin at the feed store (they get from Ideal). It was back and forth whether she was a welsummer or a brown leghorn, but it seems she is a welsummer. I was a little bummed because I read they do not lay as well as a leghorn, but then I saw the color of their eggs and I am quite happy! We have a large variety of colors and soon to be egg colors in our flock, so this will work out just right! She will be our only dark brown egg layer!

Here is Princess Julia (named by my 5 yr old)

babyrnlc...........Welcome to the Wellie thread! Pretty girl! My wellies are great layers, but they probably don't lay as well as a leghorn.

(I don't have a leghorn, so can't tell you)

I only have 4 white leghorns and they are laying machines. It seems like they are just skin & bones, but 4 extra large eggs almost every day, and on a rare day only 3. I sure don't get their eggs mixed up with the wellies. Brown leghorns I've had in the past didn't seem to lay quite that good, as I recall.

Blessings
