The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Forty years ago I go find lots of things to do on a Friday night but now I can't remember what they were. Guess I'll just read more about chickens and chickens people.

Sorry you didn't get more chickies on your hatch.

I have tons of chick photos, I will look through them and see what I can see as far as the white on the chest.

Oh My! Ewesheep, you're saying you spent the 60's stoned??

Drinking went out, too......it isn't cool to come home after work and have a martini!

Now you are supposed to drink your bottled water all the time and have protein shakes!!!

I even get frowned at if I have a morning hot toddy in my coffee (irish cream of course).

But somehow, WINE still seems to be 'in.

Well, I was born in 1965 and had some idea what was going on by observing the "hippies" doing their thing. Even my parents looked at them with disgust LOL! Never touched any drugs except whatever my doc RX me. So I can not tell you what kind of effects those "hippie" popular drugs had. I remember more of the 70's than I do with the 60's.

I have Wellie eggs!!!

I spotted one today, not in the nest box. On further investigation there were two more! I'll have to take a pic of the eggs, they are very pretty.

I'm so glad Special K is finally laying, I had the 'eggs or meat' talk with her two weeks ago. It must have worked!

She's 32wo today so she's taken her time starting. I'll have to take some current pics of her and Kelloggs to get some opinions on their quality. I'm planning on breeding some chicks for layers at least. I want to add some more Wellie ladies to my flock and I haven't been able to find any pullets for sale so I'll breed my own. I wouldn't want to sell any as Wellies though if they aren't good representatives of the breed.

Ewesheep, I was born in the 50's and didn't even notice 'hippies' until I was 14, so about the start of the 70's. Didn't affect us AT ALL. Went to one little lame concert on a hill part way to Wenatchee, then attended 'the house of the rising sun' hippie house in Wenatchee and the house we moved into in 74 was a prior hippie house, but you wouldn't know it. Guess the population back then in Washington state and living out in the boonies made a real difference. Mom went back to college and graduated her last two years 66-68 and they were giving LSD in the Psych class experiments. Don't know if she tried it. She was in her 30's! I remember one of my sister's classmates growing long hair and it curled and he was worried about looking like a girl but trying to look like a hippie. We tuned him in to conditioner so he could get a comb through it!

Guess it just didn't affect us farmer kids much!

RareBreed-congrats on your Wellies finally going off. The UK standard is online if you follow the links from the Welsummer Club of North America. Depending on the availability of wellies in your area, sometimes you have to breed up what you have and cull it hard. If you do that a year or two, you would know if you need to start with fresh stock or not.

So far, my chick results are glum. White chests, darker than normal down, blonde chick, now they are feathering in and I'm seeing BARRS instead of partridge in the feathers. Makes one wonder what the hatcheries did to get these birds to be Welsummers. So far, the source from Alabama that said, 'I got my birds from a man in tennesee' seems to be the best colored 3 week old chicks! I searched her on the internet and a few years ago it looks like she had Barber birds, so maybe that is the best source. Just needs to pack her hatching/shipping eggs BETTER as the yolks and aircells were mostly disrupted. But if you look at my Avatar, Cassidy, I am seeing white under the chin and maybe white on the chest low down in that photo and she was from Alabama!

Letting them grow out, taking notes and photos. Waiting for better chicks at Chickenstock from Opa. Hope he has a GOOD HATCH!!

Cheers all, I'm off the puter for this glorious day!
