The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Chooks I had read somewhere that the blue shows the most accurate color of the eggs.

Thanks Ewe. I figured that is where she is going to end up. They are kinda flighty right now and those are the best pics I could get. I will try again later. I may have my daughter catch them and hold them so I can take good pics.

I am so glad that he hatched them for me and that then they were able to hitch a ride with someone to me.

There is actually a quad, so even with the one girl going to the laying flock, I will still have a trio of them.

I thought the same, but didn't know if I was seeing things or not, so didn't want to mention it. She doesn't look to have the gold in her hackles - which is how my poorly colored one started out.

And I agree, the older ones are purdy!

Well I went out and looked at her very closely. She has no "lacing" on her neck, it is a pure goldish red. Then the markings on her feathers are similar to a Barnvelder (looks like incompletely double laced). She will definitely be going to the laying flock.

Here are some pictures of my welsummer chicks from Whitmore farm, when they were just a few days old. They are 3 weeks old now, and I need to take some new pictures.

I ordered 25 chicks, and split the order with 2 other BYC'ers. I have 4 pullets and 1 rooster.

Hello and welcome to the wellie thread!

I don't want to burst your bubble, but my welsummers don't usually start laying until after 24 weeks. If you have yours from a hatchery, they may start sooner. Either way, not too much longer to eggs!

I've had many start at 20-22 weeks. Mine are Calicowoods stock (Harry Shaw from Lowell Barber). I've also had groups not start until 30-35 weeks. It seems to have more to do with the time of year they were hatched than anything else.

Hi everybody! I'm finally back from vacation - rode enough horses and caught enough fish to last for a while (the dry-fly fishing in Idaho rocked!). My 2 Wellie pullets are now 21 weeks old, and we're so excited about getting closer to seeing their eggs - one has a comb and wattles that have turned pink, the other is still in fleshy tones. From what I'm hearing it sounds to me like they start laying late.... I promised I'd post some photos, so I'll see what I can get done this weekend. I missed reading all your posts - seems funny to miss people you don't even know, but I did!
