Ewesheep, could you please hook up with Shane Kirsten (ksf59 ? here or BYC). He has Wellies he got from Robert Fugate and has talked to him. Fugate doesn't remember at his age where he got the Wellies. Closed flock for last 30 years though. I now have birds from Kirsten's Fugate line and they are beginning to look nice. It might help nail this line down. Big thanks!!

I have another question. Did Lowell Barber live in Tennessee, and if he didn't, do we know who did that had Welsummers? I have come across two references now to people having gotten their Welsummer stock 'from a gentleman in Tennessee' and I'm thinking this was sometime prior to the last 5 years, like much longer ago?

Just chasing down my own little mystery. Thanks!

If Robert Fugate got his Wellies for 30 years and kept it that way and he does not know where he got them from....were the parents imported? Otherwise, we can say leave it as that and hopefully someone will be able to come forward on his Welsummer's origins.

I know there were some OLD photographs of the Welsummers back in the 1920's but I am not definately sure until I research some more. There were here in the United States tho, probably before Lowell Barber imported his.

Have NO idea about the breeder in TN....I will have to ask around, particuarly if Royce (Tailfeathers) may know or Erhard.

Jack Fugate lived in Athens, TN. He was the original importer of BCMarans....I believe Lowell lived in NC. I am certain it was Jack that imported some Welsummers from the UK (uncertain if they were from England or Holland) I will have to contact some of the UK breeders over there and see if there was any relation to Fugate.

How can you tell the sex? Is it the "eyeliner"?

The one in the front of the photo screams roo to me...and yes I made that assumption by the eyeliner and the creamy colored chest. Notice the girl in the back has more definite eyeliner that goes further than the males, the males eyeliner is short and just fades out. Also, notice how much lighter in color the male is over all vs. the female.

When you look down the stripes down the back does the female have a very fine, dark almost black line that outlines the "V" and the dorsal stripes down to the the tail break?
Note ,the dark fine outlining on the females is usually fuzzy and not clear down the back of the neck, but defines again at the dorsal stripes and I have noticed that on the females this line is on both sides of the dorsal stripes. I do not notice this "outline" on the males at all. Also in my birds all the males have a creamier lighter chest than the girls.

This is just my opinion and this is what I see in my birds, my birds are sexable at hatch, but some lines of Wellies are not.

I agree with Pink on that!
