The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Kim, I really hope it's worth the wait - with as red as she is, she should be laying! I've looked ALL over the run (it's 50' X about 80', so it's big) for hidden nests, but NOTHING! She is a really pretty girl, I'm just anxious for her eggs!

You had asked for more pictures of the little pullet - she's the first one pictured. I'm now leaning towards keeping her - she's getting nice shafting on her chest and though she's not quite as dark as I like, she has super yellow legs, which it nice. What do you think?

I think personally she has a nice conformation, good comb and looks very pleasant in personality. To get a mate for her, get a darker roo and hope her daughters will be of proper color and egg color as well.

I know some strains would produce inconsisent color and that is what we need to work on getting them consisent.

Well, the darker roo isn't a problem - Moose is definitely dark!

Thanks for your opinion Robin.

My ladies have nice red combs and were hatched the first week of May - still no eggs. I'd find some evidence if they were eating the eggs, right? These are my first chickens. They are quite lovely and have great personalities, just aren't earning their keep yet!

They are just now going on 6 mos of age and I suspect that with the shorter daylight hours that perhaps they are going to be a bit slower to start.

Sometimes there is evidence of eaten eggs, sometimes they leave pieces of shell in the nest box and sometimes they leave nothing. I would doubt that they are egg eaters.

Tailfeathers has a great idea....flip those girls over and take a look at their personal areas. You will need to pull the tail up out of your way so that you can clearly see the vent. I was told by an old farmer friend that the vent should be approx the width of 2 fingers or a tad more across and if you look into it a little closer you should see that it is moist or wet if she is laying and it will be dry if she is not. Hope that makes sense and hope it helps. If this is not what Tailfeathers was referring to then I hope he will come by and correct me.
