Got a close look at one of the Wellie Roos in the hen pen and he has 5 points and the shorter wattles!! Actually, comb wise, all three of those boys don't look too bad.

I tried to take photos, but they didn't want to cooperate, then the camera died.

I found 3 colors of bands left and a clear one so a few of the girls are still discernable by bands and now I need to find the card saying who is who. It was a pink banded lady that laide an absolutely "maran dark' colored egg today. I found her up where she shouldn't be and sure enough a batch of 5 other eggs. She finally laid me another dark one to save for the bator.

I WAS going to start it up this weekend, but washed it and dryed it out good and now the thermostat switch for the wafer is kaput cause it isn't working.

Just wanted to check in here as I have been absent for a while.
Cheers, all

I have about 30 welsummers out of channing grisham line I have a few questions, can you color sex the chicks ? who the heck is channing grisham I have looked around the web to find some info but not much I can find, Any thoughts??

You can try to color sex the chicks by looking at the V's on their heads and the stripes/line patterns. It is not 100% fool proof method.

As for Channing Grisham, I have asked the SAME question too. Pretty elusive guy LOL! I could find John Hall, and similar breeders which they all joined the WCNA website and FB WCNA site as well.

As the stories I've heard from various breeders that are familiar with Mr Grisham, he was sort of an "odd" person, so dedicated to his chicken breeds and would not let any birds go, no matter how many he hatched and raised. You have to gain his trust or he simply will not trust you at all if he feels that you will "ruin" the breed by not letting you buy his birds, chicks or hatching eggs. I do not think he has shown his Welsummers but I am sure someone else who is more knowledgeable about him can give us a story how he got his Welsummers, his goals with the breeds, etc.

If you can, can you show pictures of your flock? We are trying to figure out if there is any distinction or differences between the Lowell Barber and Channing and Hall birds on type, disposition, conformation and egg production.

can you elaborate on the color sexing , I have some chicks with very dark stripes some with lighter stripes and what about the v strip? I don't have any pics now as mine are all young.

Females usually have a well defined V on their head with eyeliner around their eyes. Males usually have a messy V on their head and no eyeliner. (but can have the smudge at the back of the eye)

It's not 100% like Robin said, but it's a pretty good guess at what you'll end up with.

if you post some pictures we can help point out what we look for to tell what they are. We have an easier time tell when they are a day or so old, as they start putting in the first feathers it gets harder. As the chicks start putting in the breast feathers, boys will have black and girls will have salmon colored.
