The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Haven't heard any issues with Ruth's shipping methods...everyone told me she did what Kansas was talking about.

Could you talk to her about it? Or did the USPS did some kicking around?

Lately the shipped eggs been kicked around and even it has FRAGILE written all over it. Including eggs from a breeder an hour and half from me! Out of 14 eggs, two hatched out, both boys. One box from VA, man, they did a number on it and don't think ANY of them will develop due to air bubbles being all over the surface of the eggs.

You will have to keep on trying....not everyone has success at the first round. I remember having Blue Orpingtons and goodness knows HOW many eggs I've gotten to just get a trio. ALOT!

I just started a new packing method and I really looking forward to seeing how the hatch result are compared to previous methods. The customers seem to be happy with it.

The eggs are wrapped in bubble wrap, rolled inside of tubes of newspaper. The tubes hold the eggs vertical with the aircell end up. There is one piece of tape on the outside of each tube (I hate busting an egg trying to get the darn tape off the bubble wrap!!) These tubes placed in rows in the box and surrounded by 2 layers of bubble wrap. All around that is either shredded paper, foam or newspaper, what ever is on hand. The only time I've had eggs bust is when I've over packed trying to fit 2 dz eggs in the standard large priority box. I actually think I busted the egg when I closed the lid

My trying to get Speckled Sussex has been this way. I have 1 15 week old pullet and 2 4 week old after trying to hatch them for a year now. Same is true for BLRW (I have 2 10 day olds), Jersey Giants (8-10 7-10 day olds) and BBS Orpingtons. I figure, try, try again. I may be saving money in the future and buying trios if I really want the breed.

I decided to get a broody breed just for hatching eggs. First, I hope my Orpingtons actually go broody next year. Second, I hope they do a better job of hatching chicks than me.
