The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I'm new to this thread, I usually hang out on the Consolidated Kansas thread, but I just hatched two new Welsummer chicks & have more eggs in the incubator, so I thought I would ask a question of you all. Have any of you ever seen a white Welsummer? I got a few eggs from a friend who only has Welsummers & I know these two chicks came from those eggs, but one is an odd one. Here is a pic of the two of them together:



You can barely see the caramel colored stripes down the back on the yellow chick. What do you all think? Is this just a fluke or have you seen this happen before?

Cool! What lines are they? Are you going to keep it? I'd love to see what it looks like as it gets older. Maybe it can be the start of a new color variety in Welsummers

In the past, a few of our BYCers had the misfortune of getting these kind of chicks from a particular breeder. It is a no no in the Welsummer breed. It is a fault and never should be used for breeding for pure Wellies. However if you are incline to use it for egg laying only or crossing with another EE or Ameraucana, you can make some Olive Eggers which is starting to become popular.

We did have a thread on the White Welsummers and it never can be a White Welsummer. It is a cross bred and it should not be called Welsummer either. The acceptable color is the Partridge colors and Silver and Gold Duckwings are common in the UK. We want the Welsummer breed as pure and not mixed with other breeds. It would lose recognition of the breed itself.

Do the Welsummer breed a favor, DON'T breed the lighter colored or white chicks! I would not even use the siblings either because they have the possiblity of passing on the light colored gene to their offsprings.

The darker chick has white on it's head too, which I have never seen before.

I had to go back to 2009 to find the picture, but I had a light wellie similar to that... this chick came from Ideal Poultry. As it grew up it ended up colored like a Welsummer... well, sort of. It was never the same quality as a breeder bird.
