The Welsummer Thread!!!!

If any of you are planning on breeding, don't get rid of those roos at hatch! You'll have to raise as many as you can to make sure you get a good one. If you are just planning on eggs for yourself no big deal though

Here's a photo of a cockerel chick to contrast with the pullet photo Pink posted. Note the difference in the eyeliner and V that Pink mentioned. This little guy is a chick I got from Whitmore Farm. He is 22 weeks old now.

This makes me nervous, because our little chick is the spitting image of this chick, but ours was specifically sexed as a pullet. If "she" turns out to be a "he" I will be absolutely devastated, as she's my most favorite of the four. She is 2 days old. =(

Actually not planning to keep any roos that hatch because daddy has white wing feathers. Hoping to get some birds or hatching eggs from a good line without that fault and then raise a new roo. BTW anyone here selling hatching eggs right now?

Ok, so here's (maybe) a stupid question. Are Welsummers smarter than other chickens or did I just get a couple einsteins? My two 9 weekers seem to be better at figuring things out than my 22 weekers (like going for the latch on the brooder). They also seem much more courageous, getting themselves into places in the yard that the other girls haven't even gone close to. Strange.

That is cute. I have noticed my Wellies have a different personality than my other birds. They are very sweet and interested in what I am doing. At a young age they seemed to be that way. my Orpingtons got more friendly when they started to lay eggs, but, by far, my Euskal Oiloas are the friendliest.

My Wellie hens come over to see me every time I go into their pen. One loves snuggling with me. She doesn't want me to pick her up, but she wants to get close and get some love. I think I love this breed.

Do any of you have hatching eggs right now? I really really want to hatch some chicks so they will be laying in the spring ;-) My roo has white feathers in his wings and white fluff at the base of his tail so looking for a line without that fault. I'm also looking for Black Copper Marans, saw some ads on CL for BCMs but the pics show birds with awful looking tails and white feathers.

Just found this thread! We have on wellsummer and love her! Most of our chickens have started laying and I am not sure if she has yet. I found an egg in the nesting box that was a bit darker that the others and had a lot of dark speckles on it. I noticed all the different colors of eggs in your avatar picture and thought I might ask you what a wellsummer egg looks like when they first start laying?

OK, got some good closeups this morning; I'm thinking I might have 2 girls and 2 boys based on that V/eyeliner thing. What do ya'll think?

The V on this one isn't as pointed as the others, but the eyeliner is very distinct.

Not sure on this one, the V is distinct but the eyeline is broken, Roo?

Pretty sure this ones a girl by this method

Again, distinct, pointed V but broken eyeline. Roo?
