The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I got a week apart bantum and full size Wellies from BYC. I have never been able to tell them apart - all same size. They do seem to be nice enough birds, but they look and act like sparrows. Occasionally I am able to catch one of them when they are not in full flight. Chelsea

Yes.
My girls start around 9 months to lay eggs, don't lay good until 12 months.

Mine started around 6 months. However, my silver laced wyandotte is 8 months old and still no eggs. I think it's just different for every chicken.

My Welsummer pullet is 7months...8 months  Oct. 14th...and she still hasn't laid and egg.  Are Welsummers known for being slow starters???

Mine usually start in the 24-30 week range. I did have one girl that held out for 11 months. She laid for a couple months, then went broody.

Hi Welsummer folks!

I picked these guys up at a chicken swap, I hadn't heard of the breed but the guy assured me they would be ok with my cochins. I think they were four weeks old then and I've had them for four months.

How long do these guys lay on average? Are they like the cochins and keep a slow trickle of eggs for 4-6 years, or burn out more quickly?

I notice that the tails form an empty triangle, is that a breed thing, or will they get a fluffy (er) butt as they age?

Thanks!

That's only like a hybrid layer though isn't it? Don't they dry up after 3-4 years? And hello to a fellow Englishman
