Um ... has anyone any ideas how to get my Welsummer to start laying again ? She squats happily whenever I go near her and I ruffle her neck, back and feathers - she fluffs herself up after that, - but is not doing anything more about anything - laying that is..

She went into a very very slow moult during our late Autumn ( May - Australia ) .... laid eggs right through our winter, which was kind of odd - and began growing her feathers again - which is when she gave up laying. Our winters are nothing like those in the Northern Hemisphere I might add. They are cold but milder overall.

I really don't understand all this. Her comb is a lovely red, she is in fine fettle, eats like a pig .... but has not produced an egg now for about 2 months.

She is only 2 years old - has she given up altogether ? Is that a trait of the Welsummer ??

Would appreciate some information about this weird set of circumstances.

If she is in good over all health she should be fine. I dont know what the conditions are like down there but if she isnt getting 16hrs of light a day then she may not lay. Check her abdonman make sure she isnt over weight. And good luck.

Thanks miquwid ..... your comments about 16 hrs of light a day, might show the problem. Neighbours at the rear have a massive and beautiful oak tree, which is now in full leaf bloom - and shades the chicken runs 85 % at least. So she is definitely NOT getting the sun she should. And being she is a big bird, and a big eater - I will try to establish whether she is just fat. She's always been the biggest of girls. I didn't know sunlight was so important. Just thought as long as a day is dry and sunny, that light was enough - not the full sun. I do know they love to sun-bathe ... so had best try to move them to a sunny spot in the garden to free range. Have to get myself a puppy pen to do that though ..... as they tend to spend their free range time digging around under bushes, which also has the effect of them not getting any sun at all. Lots to think about.

Tabitha, the now 8-month-old welsummer, has still never laid an egg. Is there something wrong with this chicken?

She should be fine remember ours was about 8 months by the time she laid an egg.
