The Welsummer Thread!!!!

This is Pepper, my only Wellie. I wanted 2 But one turned out to be a Speckled Sussex... Oh we'll, I love Pepper anyways

what's with the fluff on the above welsummer? is that normal?

no disrespect to the welsummer pictured, i've just never seen that.
Thanks for the question. All have that softer down that extends from the back end to the thighs. Normally most of the "skirt" is covered by other more dense feathering. In this picture the angle is one reason it looks "rounder" the other is that I whistled to make her stop mid-stride so the step of the leg and thigh is making it protrude as well. Here is another angle the same day.

Also some earlier pictures of the eggs when they first started laying

I thought welsummer eggs were darker, but if that's them, Tabitha may be laying. I have a few like that. I figured they were miscolored barred rock, speckled sussex or australorp. When you have several breeds that lay brown eggs, it's hard *for me* to tell who laid what, except the EE with her mint-green egg.

Hey ShinShien, welsummer egg could/can be a little darker. my welsummer lay middle brown Color eggs..... it can be hard to tell the difference between the eggs color that different breeds. lay. green and blue eggs are the easy to telll. :)

If you are getting one with more speckling than the rest, my guess is that they are Tabitha's. Mine went from a light speckle, to a heavy dark speckle and now are just dark all over with some moderate spots. They are also larger than the others. One other thing I noticed is the shell texture. It feels "dry" and "corse" if that makes sense :-/. My other breeds are kind of slick and smooth. Hope that helps.

I have a wellie but i also have a amber sexlink that is laying a dark speckled egg. My wellie isnt laying yet but i suspect i will have a hard time telling them apart when she does start laying.

My flock is kinda different but anyways I am happy that my wellie Pepper, is the only LF pullet we have xD our others are bantams or a LF Roo. Should be easy telling her eggs from the other chickens :p

I'm confused. The australorps are laying medium-to-light brown eggs. The SS are laying light-brown to light-cream. The BR are laying the same as the SS. The EE lays a mint-green *easy to tell apart* and the wellie isn't laying. All I know is I get 5-8 eggs daily out of 10 hens. Never 9 or 10.

Rarely will you 9 or 10 eggs a day unless you get production layers. Of my 6 sexlinks and 1 barred rock i get an average of 5-6 eggs a day. The rest of my flock is too young to lay.
