From whitmores pics, there is barely a difference in color between chocolate marans and "terra" wels eggs. They admit Marans are darker, but its very minimal. Obviously a breeder will have better stock, I am inquiring to see if there's a few out there who have them from Meyer, and if they have a darker egg than the normal brown layers. I'd love to get what I want from Whitmore, but the idea of being able to get them sexed, means I can get the ratio of hens to roo's I want. They also stopped selling anconas, which is key if I'm going after a rainbow mix. I'd prefer not to order from two places to end up with what I'm after.

I think that I have figured it out. As I was washing dishes last night I realized that I had been collecting way too many brown eggs. I took a closer look and about half of them are far pinker than the others. I know my barred rock's eggs and these aren't them! It seems my little lady HAS been laying, but not the green eggs that I expected (I expected green, too, but wasn't sure). Maybe her ameraucana side gave her a pink egg gene?? I have no idea.

I guess now I know

Anybody have Wellsummers from Meyer? I'm ordering from them so I can get the assortment I'm after, and was curious as to how "chocolate" their eggs are. I've heard hatchery birds eggs don't end up as dark as you'd expect. I might buy from Whitmore, as they seem to have real good stock, but its pricey and they don't offer the spectrum of birds I wanna get.

I have a Wellie from Meyer. Still is just 24 weeks though

While this is a gorgeous picture of a hen with that beautiful landscape as a backdrop, it could also serve as a perfect close-up picture to critique some Welsummer SOP problems: stippling/peppering so coarse that it becomes lacing in parts, cushion towards the tail, eye color, backline hard to tell because of the camera angle. Also, it could serve as a model to illustrate what perfectly healthy, robust, and happy bird should look like. Thanks for sharing your stunning pictures with us, Johnn!

I know we've been discussing the peppering a lot on the WCNA site, and that the best way to breed this out is to have a rooster with correct chest coloring. Also, knowing that its supposed to be very flat, I see some cushioning in many hens,What's the best way to correct the fault of the cushion on the back -.
