The Welsummer Thread!!!!

There are few threads on BYC that have good tips for taming an aggressive rooster. Things like don't let him mate in front of you, knock him off the back of your hen. Bring a broom in with you and gently use that to push him away when he tries to jump on you. If you are consistent he will back down and accept you as lead rooster. Sorry to hear you are disappointed with your Wellies, I find them quite charming. If you want the dark eggs right away go for Marans people have been working with them a bit longer, maybe you can find a neighbor who would split an order with you from a smaller breeder with better quality stock. We did have a Wellie/Ameracuna mutt Rooster, named Buck, who was fine with me but kept trying to jump on the kids (the kids would just scream, they didn't have the courage to stick a boot up back at him)....he became enchiladas. My daughter hates it when I announce at dinner who we are eating:)

ve my wellies very much and have not lost interest in the breed! but here in notasulga alabama they are only available from hatcheries! i can however get black copper marans. I will probably get more of those this spring.i love the two i have!this is what my marans lay...they are my favorite eggs!

is it me or do eggs look darker in person than on camera?
Yeah without a doubt the camera never captures the correct color. I've even tried to use the wife's high dollar DSLR camera with not much difference than my little iPhone camera. They just look better in person.

Just placed an order for some Welsummer chicks from Whitmore farm in MD. Have had birds from them in the past and been happy with egg color. Faverolles are still my favorites but the Welsummers have always been a close second.

Those are nice Marans eggs. I also breed Marans. Mine are looking pretty good. I've got 35 Marans eggs in the incubator now. Hopping to double my layer flock. I just joined the MCCUSA and got my egg chart from them. I actually had some darker eggs than I had thought. The charts are helpful in determining exactly where you are and where you want to be!!

In regards to a few posts in the past. Here's a couple of Welsummer roosters I'm saving back for evaluation for possible breeding. I prefer the one on the right but the roo on the left has more red in his chest which, from what I understand, will help with the heavy peppering in my hens.

Very nice photo, my preference is the right one also. Better type. But I am not sure if that is a real bird, because your cumputering skills are incredible, lol. Piet
