The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I'm new to chickens. I bought this chick from a feed store. She is supposed to be a Welsummer pullet. Now that she is 6 weeks old she is starting to get white feathers on her neck and chest. Is this normal? Or did I get something other than a Welsummer? Thanks!

Hi, I'm new too but I have a a Welsummer.... Mine did not have white on breast....her coloring looks a lot like my SS ...hopefully someone with more experience will chime in..... :)

looks to me like a cross of a wellie and maybe a sussex..but i am just guessing..i have some wellies and i havent seen any white spots with mine..my wellies are 4 1/2 weeks old now..altho your bird maybe a mix ..shes still very pretty..altho if you planned on a breeding flock of wellies then i can understand your worrys..

that sounds like a great flock ..lots of rare birds in there ..you should have a great bunch of colored egg layers .i had some sussex..the 2 i had turned out to be roos but were very friendly .infact the one is now owned by a little boy who bought him after he won a bunch of blue ribbons at our fair ...good luck , have fun and enjoy..

We've got a Wellie on the way, and can't wait to meet this beauty! We're starting our urban flock with Welsummer, Speckled Sussex, Easter Egger, and Partridge Rock hens. Fingers crossed that they all make the trip, and I can post some fluffy pictures here next week.

i just checked out your coop ..sorry to hear of your loses ..its been a harsh winter here as well ..and the bun bun sounds just kind of crazy ..i never thought of them choking on their food ..but i guess we learn something new every day ..i like the pics of the wellies you posted ..i hope mine look that nice once they grow up ..lol..i have a few wild ducks that come around here every spring ..malards they are ..i live near chautauqua lake in wny ..and we have tons of beuatiful ducks that make their way by here every fall and spring ..

these two malards fought for 2 days over a female or a nesting spot ..not sure . they both still are on our road and both still have females with them ..just now they are not buddies asnymore ..the one pair moved to the other end of the road ..

sorry folks i know i went off topic ..

After looking at some more photos I agree that she looks like a speckled sussex. She has white on her neck and chest as well as her wing coverts. I'm disappointed since I paid for a Welsummer and wanted dark welsummer eggs.

Is this common for places to mix up chicks or just sell "whatever" to clients? I believe my "Welsummer" chick came from Dunlap Hatchery. They don't even have Sussex for sale on their website. Maybe the store mixed the chick up from a different brooder tub. Of course I'll still care for my mix-n-match chicks, but I'll never buy from that feed store again! I should have read BYC forum first!!!

Hatcheries do make mistakes... So do feed stores... Expecially when they look alike.... I have a Welsummer and a Sussex..... I LOVE my Sussex....she is the sweetest out of my flock. . My welsummer is not the most friendliest.... But I understand about wanting the dark eggs.... If it's mixed it still might have darker eggs... I'm not sure... I'm new to this... Lol

It is possible she is mixed, but how likely is it that a hatchery is selling mixed chicks? Honestly I think she's a sussex. Everything I've read describes her to a T. She is very small (finally catching up a little bit) and has the white coming in now. She is pretty calm, but not overly friendly. She's getting friendlier as she gets older so I'm hoping she'll be just as sweet as our other girls.

Me too! I have 2 6 week old chicks that look just like this. Had the chipmunk striping and very pronounced V on the head that connected to the back. But this is probably a mix... Or a Sussex. I was hoping for the dark eggs, too. It appears as though only reputable breeders (hobbyists and specialized mid sized) are the only ones you can trust. The same place told me that I would love RIRs for their cold hardiness and 'easy' temperament. Note to my family... We are currently raising dinner. So very sad.

I'm not real sure on the hatcheries selling mixed chicks..... She does look like my SS... Since both the Welsummer and SS are chipmunk colored, they probably just got them mixed up... My SS loves to ride on my shoulders.. Lol..... Hopefully yours will come around.... I have a few pullets who are friendly but still HATE being handled, my welsummer and my 2 BA ... They squak and kick like I'm killing them. Lol.
