Hi, I'm new too but I have a a Welsummer.... Mine did not have white on breast....her coloring looks a lot like my SS ...hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.....
We've got a Wellie on the way, and can't wait to meet this beauty! We're starting our urban flock with Welsummer, Speckled Sussex, Easter Egger, and Partridge Rock hens. Fingers crossed that they all make the trip, and I can post some fluffy pictures here next week.

After looking at some more photos I agree that she looks like a speckled sussex. She has white on her neck and chest as well as her wing coverts. I'm disappointed since I paid for a Welsummer and wanted dark welsummer eggs.Is this common for places to mix up chicks or just sell "whatever" to clients? I believe my "Welsummer" chick came from Dunlap Hatchery. They don't even have Sussex for sale on their website. Maybe the store mixed the chick up from a different brooder tub. Of course I'll still care for my mix-n-match chicks, but I'll never buy from that feed store again! I should have read BYC forum first!!!
It is possible she is mixed, but how likely is it that a hatchery is selling mixed chicks? Honestly I think she's a sussex. Everything I've read describes her to a T. She is very small (finally catching up a little bit) and has the white coming in now. She is pretty calm, but not overly friendly. She's getting friendlier as she gets older so I'm hoping she'll be just as sweet as our other girls.Hatcheries do make mistakes... So do feed stores... Expecially when they look alike.... I have a Welsummer and a Sussex..... I LOVE my Sussex....she is the sweetest out of my flock. . My welsummer is not the most friendliest.... But I understand about wanting the dark eggs.... If it's mixed it still might have darker eggs... I'm not sure... I'm new to this... Lol
Me too! I have 2 6 week old chicks that look just like this. Had the chipmunk striping and very pronounced V on the head that connected to the back. But this is probably a mix... Or a Sussex. I was hoping for the dark eggs, too. It appears as though only reputable breeders (hobbyists and specialized mid sized) are the only ones you can trust. The same place told me that I would love RIRs for their cold hardiness and 'easy' temperament. Note to my family... We are currently raising dinner. So very sad.
