i see white between the tail feathers and the butt of the bird ..i see this on my roo as well ..is this a common trait in wellie roo's..?????..

I don't have an issue with it in my flock, but yes, it can be a problem. You don't want the tail fluff.

One of my males when he was roughly 8 months old. He got in a fight with his father, so that's why his wattles are banged up.

wow hes very handsome..my roo has way to much going on in his breast feathers and his tail spit some brown in it ..my girls are a little lite in weight ..at 14 weeks i figured they would be as big as my wyandottes at 14 weeks...
maybe next spring i'll look for a local breeder..i really like the wellies..must be all those yrs eating corn flakes..lol

is it common - yes
is it desirable - no

fluff should be minimal and slate/grey

i was watching my birds last and noticed my roo was walking up behind my wellie pullets and taking feathers from their backs or tail area..i went out and chased him a few time to get him to stop ..he would run in the coop and hide and when i went away he would come out and do it again ..i finally took a switch in with me to chase him off . i didnt hit him , i just scared him with it....he went back in the coop and didnt come out till just before dark and time to lock up ..i see he wasnt trying any of this with the wyandottes just the wellies ..he was taking feathers and eating them ..i thought i mite have to seperate him from the flock ..i will see what he does today ..but is this a common thing or is he just cannabilising them ...i no they all eat feathers when someone drops them but hes picking them off their backs or butts..they scream out when ever he does this ..

any answers would be great ..

I've seen my Wellie girl pluck a few feathers from the Wellie roo's butt and chow them down. Didn't seem to bother him.

I've seen most my birds grab a feather snack from another bird once in a while, as long as it doesn't become an ongoing thing, I think it's just how they do.

Poor Lily is being picked on by my Jersey Giant cockerel. He doesn't have any competition, so I think he is using her as competition. I believe he chose her because she has a big comb compared to the rest. The poor girl is so scared now. He chased her out the feed pen today and wouldn't let her back in, so once the rest had ate all of their food, I put the feed pen gate up and give Lily a massive bowl of mixed corn and he had to sit and watch her eat it!

my two welsummer bantams hatched yesterday! So im in the welsummer club. Hoping I've got two hens but think one is a roo....I'm completely new at this tho and will have to play the waiting game! Can't keep any roos so after the trouble we had hatching them I really hope I can keep one! My broody pekin hatched them.
