i used it when one of my wyandotte babys had a prolapsed vent .much worse then roides. and very scarry the first time i saw it.. the same for the witch hazel ..it worked great ..i was able to push it back in and after a week or so it stayed in ..you will become the birds doc in a sense ..you have to ,they will depend on you like a child , for everything..it seems like a lot but its all worth it..some on here perform surgerys on their birds ..bumble foot surgery i've seen others do ..beleave me , if someone told me i'd be tending to chickens butts with ointments 2 yrs ago i would say they were crazy..

you just find yourself doing what ever is needed ...my chickens are part of my family ..i wouldnt let my kids suffer so i cant let the feathered kids suffer either.. lol

oinments like antibacteria or neo sporan [i no nice spelling . lol ] are a must for your first aide kit as well..i no the first time i read about prep h and using it , i thought was crazy ..but like humans they suffer alot of simmular issues or ones that are treated with the same stuff we use ..

wnyegger, I just have to ask what would preparation H be for. If you tell me chickens get hemorrhoids I will really crack up!

Invest in Vetricyn. It's 100% safe for birds, and can be used near their faces and eyes with no problem. Human products (like neosporin) may contain pain reducers, which are fatal to chickens. Any ingredient ending in -caine is dangerous for your ladies!

I'm new to this thread.
I was interested in getting some welsummers and my patner's sister very kindly bought some hatching eggs in the spring and incubated them for me as a gift. I only wanted 2 or 3 as I already have a mixed flock but I ended up with 3 pullets and 4 cockerels.... the excess males will have to go to freezer camp I'm afraid, as they are poor specimens, but one of them is absolutely stunning. The thing is that he has white ears, which I thought indicated a white egg laying breed. The other cockerels have red ears but odd white feathers flecked here and there and their colours are dull which I put down to poor nutrition/cramped conditions before I got them.... my sister out law has a cattle farm and they were getting fed cattle feed I think. I'm now wondering if the eggs she got were not genuine pure welsummers though.
Anyway, I'm guessing from the photos I have seen, that the white ear lobes on my handsome lad are not correct. I will keep him regardless as the gold and red and green and violet in his feathers is quite breath taking (I'm not interested in showing), but just wondered if there was a white eared variety or if he is a cross breed.
I'm still waiting for the pullets to come into lay. I don't know exactly how old they are but they are 20-24 weeks

Unfortunately I don't have the facility to post photos at the moment.

Are you sure it's the earlobes that are white?

Welsummer don't have white earlobes...but Penedesenca's and Brown Leghorns do and look similar to Wellie roos.
A pic would tell for sure.

I have both brown leghorns and wellsummers. They both are colored the same, but the leghorns have white earlobes, wellies dont. The wellies are bigger and fluffier. The leghorns have tall flopped over combs also, wellies small combs. Yours could be mixed.
I got mine from a hatchery with three roos, two of the roos were bigger , bigger than the RIReds i had, and their colors were not as correct, they were also meaner, even though the smaller better looking one was the top roo on the pecking order. He was the one i kept for breeding, pictured as my avatar, hes a couple months older now and really good with my kids and the hens.

i have a hen that has white lobes and she lays a pinkish egg..i thought she had favos when i first seen the white but it turns out just to be the color of her lobes..

He definitely has white ear LOBES.

She incubated legbar and welsummer eggs together and he is nothing like a legbar obviously, so I would have to assume he came from a brown egg and therefore I'm guessing he's just not pure. He looks more like a welsummer colour wise than the other cockerels apart from the ear lobes and the pullets look more or less right, but since they were all from the same batch of eggs it looks like the breeder was not entirely reputable. Unfortunately my sister out law lives 3 hours away, so I didn't see the eggs and she hatches so many that she probably won't remember.

Will post a photo as soon as I am able.

he still sounds like a handsome fella ...and if you don't plan on showing him , it shouldnt be a big deal.. i am sure he will be a great protector of the flock ..

Just found this thread! So excited I have 1 welsummer "Ginnie" and 2 Speckled Sussex "Rainie and Hermione".

Ginnie is about 28 weeks old and no eggs yet. Hermione is the same age and finally started squating this week. When should I expect my wellie to start ?
I moved them to the garage last week when I started to see frostbite and I leave the light on for them till 7:30pm. I can't wait to get that first dark brown egg!
