The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Yeah my Ameraucanas had their first big molt in October, so I haven't been getting anything from them since then even with extra light in the coop. I thought my Wellies would wait until Spring, so this is a pleasant surprise! Maybe I won't have to buy eggs all winter.

I just put a wreath on their pen for Christmas last weekend so maybe they're saying "thanks", haha.

When you finally do get eggs and you get excited about getting more, wrong! My laid 9 eggs one day and then not again until the next week. They laid 9 on two different and then came back with 4. That's real frustrating. They are eating like pigs and not earning their keep.

One of my 7 month old Welsummer's has gone broody!! I was definitely not expecting that from her... I've got loads of hens going broody at the moment (it is spring after all) but I wasn't expecting the Welsummer's to!

She's crazy protective of her nest. Every time I go near her she screams her head off

funny how they do that ..lol..try reaching under her and see whats shes sitting on .if she takes a big bite out of your hand she is def broody ..lol i have a few broodys i just take the clutch of eggs and they end up getting up ..i have 9 nesting boxes for my 21 girls and they still squak at each other when ones been on the nest to long ..all of them still only use about 4 of the nesting boxes ..they all perfer one tho over the others ..i have a bunch who think its ok to sleep in the nest boxes , so i have to move them to a roost every night ..i have it down to about 4 hens doing this now , but it was as many as 10 ..i just keep moving them each night ..sooner or later ,youd think they would get it ..

Oh I have the same problem!! I had 6 hens sleeping in the nests at night, now i've only got 3... but that is still 3 hens pooping in the nests every night... sigh

She's definitely broody. I took her off the nest to collect the eggs. She was sitting on 8 eggs and she put up a good fight when I tried to take her off them. She screamed, hissed and bit me!!

Yeah we're about 2 weeks into summer now. I live in the south part of Australia (Victoria) so its not toooo hot in summer here... although almost every year we get life threatening bush fires...

At the moment the weather is on average between 25-30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 fahrenheit)... But in the peak of summer in january most days will be from 30 to 40 degrees Celsius (86 to 104 fahrenheit).

I've never had snow at my home... well it did technically snow once but it was hardly any and it wasn't particularly pleasant. There are quite a few mountains a couple of hours from me that have snow in winter... but even their snow probably wouldn't be as nice as yours... Aussie snow tends to be gross and icy rather than soft.

To be honest I don't really like snow... can't really imagine having to live in it, way too cold for me!!! Dreaming of a white christmas?? Nah mate, give me a nice hot day so I can go swimming and have a barbecue outside!

i am the same way .i prefer the warm over the cold ..i used to love winter ..i hurt my back in 93 and havent been able to deal to well with winter anymore ..we try and make it south to florida in late feb ..this yr we are staying home ..ugh..snow doesnt leave here till march april..by late may we can have our gardens started..yeah we get temps in the -20F sometimes around here ..can take your breath away and freeze your skin in seconds..poor birds manage somehow ..i no i have been temped to put heat in there but relise it cwould mess them up if our power went out ..

i just come in from letting the birds out ..a couple of my wellie girls have had patches of feathers picked out or my roo's kicked them out durring the dance ..so i've been feeding them feather fixer the last few days and i think i can see new feathers starting to fill in those areas ..i am heading to a feed store to find more ..it says it helps with mites as well and with molting chickens ..mine are not molting but still needed some help with the feathers ..i went to nutrenas web site and asked were i could find their brand and they sent me dirrections as well as a coupon fort a few dollars off ..i paid 8 bucks for a 7lb bag ..pretty pricey i thought ..
