The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I am in Tucson, too--up near Magee and Oracle! I'd like to get breeder quality. Maybe we can join in on an order to save on shipping. I have a friend who wants to order some Delawares. There is one farm I came across that has both Delawares and Welsummers. Are you a member on Facebook's group Tucson CLUCKS? that's a fun place to meet people, too.

Sorry, but I just got some welsummer chicks from a guy in San tan valley. But thanks!

Finally, at 34 weeks 2 days I received my first wellie egg! I thought this day would never come. It's so pretty!!

Beautiful egg. I have one welsumer. My avator picture. She is 8 months, 5 days old and no eggs yet. Of the other hens I got with her, all the others are laying, starting before six months old. The next to the last just started 3 days ago and her eggs are a nice size. She seems to have skipped the pullet stage.
1/6/15 Have to amend this. Got my first wellie egg today and love the color. It is a beautiful rich terra cotta, an asset to my egg basket. This spring hope to make some olive egger from hers and my marans' eggs.

Thanks. I have two welsumer Pullets and a cockerel in my flock. I really enjoy them :). Now to have my other one to start laying.

I've had Welsumers for less than a year, but I've had a positive experience thus far! My parents surprised me with what they were told were three pullets, which actually turned out to be two pullets and a cockerel. That would have worked out in my favor as I planned to breed them, but I lost the cockerel to Mareks and one of the pullets to necrotic enteritis soon after.

The survivor, Amber, is naturally resistant to Mareks and has surprised us all with her cold-hardy nature. It was down to single digits a few weeks ago and I have yet to see her show any discomfort. As time goes on I've been led to believe that she may be a large bantam or a small standard.
