Hi everyone. I read a lot of the posts on here but wow, over 1,000. So I learned some things.
We are currently chicken-less after having sold our flock of Buff Orphingtons last year as I was having surgery on my ankle. We wanted to start over with a different breed.
Tentatively, Welsummers. They are gorgeous birds! I have read about getting them from a Breeder or a hatchery like Estes (currently Estes just has straight run).
My husband and I were looking for a bird which is docile and hoping non-aggressive. We have children visit who like to hold the chickens too (supervised).
The last flock (our third flock though my husband's family had large flocks when he was younger) we had were NPIP certified; and we chose Buff Orpingtons. First time we added a rooster. They were beautiful birds and docile though the hatchery sent us two roosters and the one which wouldn't let me out of the house had to leave. The other one well, he wasn't aggressive but we had to be careful. Even after upside down treatment he would watch me! He was not nice to his ladies though and we had hens with bald spots. He had a few he was more rough with.
For our new flock we are trying to find a breed which are docile and hopefully a nicer rooster too.
I wanted to ask the weight of the adult birds? I cannot seem to find it online. The Welsummers sound excellent and we are leaning toward them, when we get them we'd rather go with a breeder but also from NPIP.
Thanks.

Enjoying reading all your posts and learning more too.
