The Welsummer Thread!!!!

At a farmers market in Washington people were paying $9 a dozen and the farm sold out before noon.

My co-workers insist on paying $5 a dozen for my eggs.

I calculated it costs me $3.80 a day to feed 20 birds not including any extras like bedding or treats. I increased my flock to 26 this year (including 5 Welsummer pullets and a cockerel!)

Why don't you want to use aprons or split them up? Those are the most common solutions, and the most effective.

So I don't have room to keep twenty juveniles and watch them all grow out. I wish I did, but I will have to sell some of the pullets locally as pets/egg layers. Once they are feathered juveniles, what qualities and faults should I look for to make my decisions?

Color of the neck feathers.

i tried using aprons but i find them on the floor in the morning...
@wny egger The only time I've seen that happen I had too many roosters for the amount of hens I had.
i have the opposite actully to many hens for one roo..20 hens and just one roo ..i think i am going to have to build another runn just for him ..i hate to think of spliting them up ..i have a feeling it may cause him to start to be mean ..hes such a good boy to ..he always waits to eat and he brings the girls in 4 at a time to eat each morning ..if he finds a worm he calls the flock to it ..

thanks ..i guess atleast the weathers better so it wont be as bad as it could be to build one now ..

Could they maybe starting to molt?
naw ..they have had bare backs most of the winter ..i see him mounting the wyandottes and feathers coming out when he does ..i guess hes just to rough for them ..i'll be moving him to his own coop and run ..he will still be able to see the others , just not be able to get to them ..you think he'll deal with that ..??

Help...... is this not a Wellie? I bought him as such after a bobcat got my breeder this winter, and now that I see chicks from him, I have serious doubts. (Will post pix of chicks when they're out of the incubator.)
